    What would you do ???

    Having had my speakers vandalized by a burgler. I am faced with
    replacing the bass drive units in my Celestion sl6i's. Once repaired my
    system will consist of :-

    PIONEER A-400
    ROTEL 965BX CD
    CELESTION SL6i's - Concrete Stands

    I was in the process of planning my next upgrade and in particular
    looking at upgrading the speakers. The Celestions are good speakers but
    after a few months I began to tire with what is an accurate but
    undynamic presentation at low-Medium Volume.

    I guess the crux of the mater is that the Celestions are not very
    effecient and do take some driving. I guess the A-400 is not really
    upto the job.

    With this in mind and a budget of approx 450 what would you do ?

    Upgrade A400 keep Celestions ? suggestions please....

    Musical Taste : Pop , Rock and Jazz

    Have more choice of position and speaker type now so floor standers are
    an option this time round.

    Many Thanks,
    Jonathan

376.1Go for anamp with high current outputWOTVAX::MEAKINSClive MeakinsThu Oct 15 1992 00:1215
    The speakers are fundamentally good but as you say, do need some
    driving. The A400 has it's good points but isn't in the same league.
    If you want to end up with a good budget system that suits you, go for
    some 200 efficient speakers.

    If you want to end up with a "mid-range" system, go for a new amp.
    450 is a bit on the low side and I don't have the mags to hand to check
    prices. Audiolab and Arcam Delta 90 spring to mind though as being
    suitable, though different.

    You could always go for more expensive speakers, the Castle quarter
    wave transmssion lines are 650 and efficient (90db/...). I believe
    though that these speakers would show up the ability of the A400 to be
    "tiring" (when viewed in a higher-end system, A400 owners please don't
    take too much offence).

    I don't know the A400. I just bought Epos ES14 speakers @ 485 pounds,
    and they are worth every penny of it. However, you may soon end up
    replacing your amp -- just like me (note 16.21).

376.3How about Mission 753 NEWOA::SUTCLIFFEJMon Oct 19 1992 11:5222

    I just finished reading a review in Hifi-Choice of Missions new 753
    speakers. The review is really very positive about the speakers
    capability. The pricing is also very aggresive to try to shift more
    volume. (495)

    The review indicates that the A400 will drive these beasts quite
    happily. This would give me the upgrade path I would prefer to take.
    Speakers first , amp second.

    Can anyone recommend a dealer who might give me a reasonable trade in
    on the Celestions. What would you guess I might be offered ?

    Jonathan

    Anyone demoed the 753 themselves yet ???

    HFN/RR also liked the 753s, but the price being quoted in their review
    was more like 600, I think. If the price has come down by 100 as they
    went into production, it sounds like a good buy. I don't know who sells
    them though...

376.5Well why not ...?NEWOA::SUTCLIFFEJMon Oct 19 1992 17:447
    Ooops....
    There I go slashing the price for Mission.

    Not a bad idea though!

    I'm also interested in the 753s. The price quoted in Hi-Fi Choice was
    595.
