Hi,

I'm having a bit of a problem with my old cassette deck.

Its a 10 year old vintage Panasonic CT-250, and it sounds
great still.

Unfortunately, the auto stop has started triggering for no
particular reason. The auto stop (I imagine senses if there
is too much of a load on the motor), and stops.

Does it make sense to have a look at this myself, and clean
bits that look dirty? What should I look for?

Or is it better to send it to someone who will charge 40
for doing nothing to a deck that cost me 15??

366.3Belt stretch problem?SEDDFS::KORMANtgif!!Tue Jul 28 1992 10:2917
Hi,

Watch the tape counter carefully when the unit is running - does it work?
If it works, does it work smoothly? Does it stop working just before the auto-
stop triggers.

On many older machines, the autostop was operated via the drive belt to the
tape counter - eventually, the belt stretches and starts to slip - and the
autostop triggers. Any erratic operation of the counters points to this
being the problem - just fit a new belt.

If you can't get a belt the right size, get a larger diameter one, and cut a
section out with a scalpel or razorblade. Then re-join the two end with
superglue - works perfectly!
