| Jack,
I too have a Kairn and have been considering feeding it to a remote
amp/speakers in the kitchen. Also like you, I have the TV and video
plugged into the hifi. Some questions, if you don't mind.....
1. Which Kairn output do you use? I considered using one of the line
outputs, but that would lose the independence of source selection
between rooms (the person in the kitchen has to listen to the same
source as whoever is in the main room, who may not want the hifi on at
all). Also it means the remote sound level is dependent on the Kairn's
volume setting as well as the remote amp's.
2. How do you achieve the limited remote control and what is a
"Powermid"?
Good hifi is expensive and it seems a shame to only get the benefit in
one room.

well, the second speakers are remote, but the second amp is
with the rest of the hi-fi

the second amp receives a recording signal from the Kairn.
the amp is pretending to be a tape deck.
this means that i can have different sound in lounge and
kitchen, because the Kairn lets you listen to one source
(lounge) and record another (kitchen).
it also means that the volume in the kitchen is controlled
only by the second amp.
the signal to the second amp happens to go in to the tuner
socket, but that's merely because it amp always powers up
with the tuner as the default source.
(the real setup is a bit more complicated, 'cos there is a
QED switching box between the Kairn and the second amp. i
think that's because there was some limitation to the number
of sockets i had on the old LK1.)

a Powermid is 2 small pyramids, each connected to the mains.
the first pyramid picks up the signal from any remote
control, converts it to radio, and retransmits it to the
second pyramid. the second pyramid. converts the signal back
to infrared and broadcasts it into the room.
thus, in the kitchen, i can use any remote control that i
could use in the lounge. it's handy that i got one Linn
remote control with the Kairn and another one with the
Karik...one for each room :)
i can swap from one source to another in the kitchen, but i
can't change the volume.

| Ah yes, the second tape output. I use that for my headphone amp, but I
could feed from there to an integrated amp.
Provided I site the Powermid receiver appropriately, I should be able to
drive my Micromega Optic with it too.
Where did you get the Powermid, and how much did it cost?
Although there are probably lots of Karik/Numerik owners now, you are
the first person I've "spoken to" who has actually bought one; how do
you rate it?

| You can get thee Powermid from most Sat-TV shops.
I got mine mailorder from Cheshire Sat. Consultants in Warrington cost
about 60-70.
PS The other ``thing'' you probably saw on the Linn Dealers list is the
new cheap Kaber. Also the price for the Karik + Bitstream board is
1498.
I'm not sure I like the name Karin/Pro now about
Kairn/No-LP-12-input-so-it-can't-possibly-sound-any-good :-)

I think it's there as well. It looks like it got here by accident
("write" instead of "reply", maybe?), but this is better place to have
a discussion, anyway.

| the powermid was about 80(?). i got mine from uxbridge
audio.
the karik/numeric? i think ecstatic would be a suitable
understatement. however, to be fair, i got the kairn and at
the same time and the k400 cable a week later.
i auditioned it against a baby naim, and the meridian
200-series transport + DAC.
i started off liking both those, even though they were very
different from each other. however, i found that i hated
violins on the meridian - the machine had such a bright
presentation they sounded scratchy. the naim was very nice
all round. very smooth.
then i tried the 600-series transport with the 200-series
DAC. this was a big improvement over 200, and, for me, better
than the baby naim. (i never listened to the 600-series
DAC...my conscience was having enough trouble as it was.)
then the Linn. well, it's given me a completely new CD
collection! but they all would have done that. for me, it was
way out in front, compared with the above. it's clear,
smooth, very unfatiguing (sp?).
incidentally, the kairn made a big improvement to the stereo
image from the isobariks.
