364.0. "Vinyl Tube Audio, London" by LARVAE::IVES_J (Bad Karma in the UK) Wed Jul 15 1992 13:32
On a recent trip up to town I decided to visit Vinyl Tube Audio a
fairly esoteric dealer near kentish Town Tube on Fortess rd.
they basically sell all valve amplification, Pentachord and klipsch
speakers and Nottingham Analogue T/T. Though in their adverts they are
die-hard analog'ers, they did have the CARY CD player which is the one
with the valve based analogue section.
It's the sort of place that discourages brousing as basically there is
a listening room and a front-come-storage area. The guy who appeared to
be running the shop (30ish fair hair) seemed nice enough but he was
entertaining the ART Audio distributor, a more pompous individual I
have yet to meet. ART audio sell "Exotic Cables" made in ITALY with
suitably expensive packaging and price tag. They also handle some nice
triode/pentode switchable amps and I think some expensive cartridges.
If youre in the market for valve amplification (though NOT CROFT - they
don't sell CROFT I was firmly told ) CONCORDANT, CONRAD JOHNSON,
WOODSIDE, ART, AUDIO INNOVATIONS they seem a good place to go .
The listening room was certainly up to the job, and I was encouraged by
the unusual range of names thet they stocked.
In interesting place but only if you have some cash burning a hole in
your pocket. by the way I doubt that they have anything that costs
450(less tax) :-)
