| Well, I'm about 3 months into listening to my Rotel 965 CD player.
This is an acceptable CD player. It demo's well, but I haven't found it so
compelling to live with. I still much prefer the Sondek which is more musical
and doesn't suffer from the Rotel's slightly exagerated bass. The Rotel has a
clean sound without being too bright, but is not particularly musical when
listened to for sustained periods. It has the convenience aspects which make
CD so attractive, although remote volume would be nice. When really listening
to the music, you get a frustrating sense of not being able to get to grips
with the music, as though something was eluding you.
I will be trialing a Deltec little bit with the Rotel to ascertain whether
it will improve the sound.
In summary, a good CD player, but not a great one. Still can't compare to a good
vinyl system. Overall I don't think it is a great improvement on my old Mission
PCM-II.

Due to popular demand, here is a very brief summary of what the
German magazine "Stereoplay" said about the CD950.
The styling is much cleaner than the CD850 (IMHO)
A new drive has been developed, with the detectors for focussing and
tracking located in the plane of the laser diode, instead of using a
system of mirrors. This is claimed to provide more accurate information.
The signal is fed into the newest bitstream converter TDA1547. The
"Valvo" error correcting is said to perform extremely well.
Features include: 30 title programming.
title, disk, program and (A-->B) repeat.
display turn-off.
Digital (coax + optical) outputs.
Remote volume control.
The review compared six other CD players in the same price range
(300 to 350 - German prices), the Philips came out tops. Other
placings were as follows:
second place: Marantz CD72
NAD 5440
Sony CDP X229 ES
third place: Denon DCD1290
Kenwood DP7040
Rotel RDC965BX
They were placed based on performance, features and build quality.
On sound alone the NAD and Philips were rated top.
The CD950 is apparently very new on the market and has not been
announced in the UK, or at least the dealers I spoke to were not
admitting anything. Could be they want to run down stocks of the
old CD850.
I'm waiting to audition this player before parting with the cash.
If anybody spots a British review please let me know.
Richard.
