315.0. "Linn Celtik speaker" by CHEST::WATSON (C++ may be the cure) Mon Oct 21 1991 09:59

The time has come the walrus said...

The end of the world is nigh, Linn Products are to stop production
of their Isobarik Domestic / Professional Monitoring Loudspeaker.

The 'brik, for those of you which don't know, is the Porsche 911 Turbo
of the Hi-Fi world. It has the presence of a B52 (and the weight to
match). If you haven't heard F.G.T.H. Two Tribes ``Flat out'' through a
PMS system - you haven't lived...

I will be sad to see it go. In their 15 odd year production run less
that 5000 pairs of these beasts have been made which surprised me.

So what will replace this obelisk of a speaker ?

    	1. The ``Isobarik'' Kaber. No details
    	2. The CeltiK. Details sketchy based on Kaber technology but
bigger. Cost between 3000 and 6000. Will be smaller than the 'brik.

Its a sad day in Fleet :-(

315.1A bit more on the Keltik<?>BAHTAT::SALLITTMon Oct 21 1991 13:2119
I am awaiting an invitation to hear the new Linn speakers at a dealer's
home in the next couple of weeks. Apparently the bass needs some
    tweeking before it's right.

From what I hear the Celtic (Keltik) is active only; the bass unit is
an isobarik design, and both isobarik drivers can be fed from seperate
amplifiers. The old 'barik cuts off around 30Hz, apparently this new
thing goes down to 2 or 3hz; I guess it would need to be active-only to
get good control at those frequencies.

The cabinet uses a lot of Ku-stone, the flint compound Linn
use in their latest speaker stands, and redefines the concept of a
    heavy speaker!

What will the next speaker be called? Ranger? Partik Thistle?

I can't wait to hear this thing.

From what I hear the Celtic (Keltik) is active only; the bass unit is

Better make sure you get your phase right FIRST time !

As for heavy at 98Kg each for the existing 'briks I wouldn't want to
    move a heavier speaker.

Also the 'briks start to trail off @25Hz (-3bd) but are still producing
bass at 8Hz - try feeling Rod Stuarts ``Passion'' but you need a BIG
room (Or in this case sitting 50-60 feets way, next door !)

    	Rik

PS I didn't think it was advisable to pay much below 8Hz as retinas
become detached / serious internal damage etc. Also you'd be in serious
danger of playing the warps in you album...is this a good case for CD :-)

You don't listen at much below 30Hz...

The time	: A fortnight ago
    The Place	: My house
The Event	: Rik sells his 'bariks.

Yes, you knew it had to happen, Rik has finally got round to
selling his Isobariks. These have been sold to be replaced by the new
technology of Kabers - which I hope to go active with in the near
    future...

The Kabers are still being ``run-in'' but already sound pretty
good. I'm having some difficulty placing them where they won't produce
too much bass but hope to fix that this weekend. They are better than
my old 'bariks in just about ever sence but still lack their
    ``presence''

More details when I've had time for a good long listen,

    		Rik.

They are _much_ fussier about positioning than Isobariks (or
    S.A.R.A.'s)
