308.0. "1 bit or multiple???" by ZGOV06::KLTONG () Tue Sep 17 1991 10:37

    Hi,
       I'm interested into purchasing a cd player. However, I'm doubtful
    to buy the 1-bit stream CD player that's pioneered by Philips compared
    to the multiple bits, such as the 20-bit sampling.
    I would be thankful if someone with more knowledge on these subject
    would gnerously share his/her point of view.

308.1Personally, I like multibitWOTVAX::MEAKINSClive MeakinsTue Sep 17 1991 14:5512
    I find that bitstream (1-bit) has purer treble with more low level
    detail. Multibit tends towards deeper, better timed bass.

    If absolute detail is important - bitstream

    If the timing of the music is important - multibit

    If the CD has to co-exist with even a budget record deck, then
    go for multibit, even half decent record decks exhibit good timing,
    this is IMHO why some people feel record decks are more enjoyable than CD.

    It just depends on what you listen for and enjoy.

    re .0, .1...

    If you are buying into the low end of the market, single-bit rules
    supreme; on the other hand, most high-end players/DACs are multibit,
    with a few exceptions such as Meridian.

308.5Waiting for Linn's 2-bit player :-)CRATE::WATSONC is its own virusWed Sep 18 1991 10:255
    An interesting comparison between multi and single bit systems can be
    had by comparing the two Rotel (Don't laugh there very good) players at
    the 200 mark (The 840 and 850 I think) One is single the other
    multi-bit. as they come from the same mfg. and are of similar spec /
    price the comparise is interesting.
308.6Marantz, Sony , Philip and RotelZPOVC::PARRYCHUASingapore, Life is bid-$-fineWed Sep 18 1991 15:3220
    Re -1. The Rotel multi-bit is 855 and the bitstream is 865. The 855 is
           sound much better than the 865.

           Tong, if you are looking for good transport multi-bit CD player.
           I recommend the Marantz CD80 or CD94 MKII which should be around
           Sin $1000 to $1200 with coaxial and optical output and latter
           you may consider outboard D/A convertor. Rotel 855 only has
           coaxial output, BTW Rotel 855 is rated as class C in SP, a US
           high end magazine.

           If you are interested the 1 bit CD player, then Philip 850,
           and Sony X555ESD will be the good choice. Sony X555ESD cost
           about Sin $1000, I have no ideal about the Philip 850, you
          should able to listen to the Philip 850 in most of the hi-fi
          store.

    Good luck
    Parry
