307.0. "Amp and speakers for Phillips CD840?" by IOSG::BILSBOROUGH (Just testing. Please ignore!!! ) Tue Sep 10 1991 11:38

Can anyone help me in my choice of amplifier and speakers?

I've currently got a Phillips CD840 (the bitstream they later dropped),
and a Technics RSB655 tape deck.

I'm unsure what price range I should be looking at to get my money's
worth out of what I've got.

I've put my CD player through my friends Arcam Alpha amp, and Linn
Helix speakers (mark one) and it sounded great. The Arcam amp goes for
    around 200 quid.

Recently though, I went to Reading hi-fi and listened to a 400 quid amp
and more Linn Helix mark two and this to me didn't sound nearly as good. Is
there such a difference between 200 and 400 quid amps then?

Anyway, can anyone advise what amps and speakers I should try.

    Thanks,

    Mike

The CD850 is certainly a well reviewed player, and I *think* the
internals are the same as the 840, although I'm not completely sure.

If I were in your shoes, I'd be looking at amps and speakers up to
around the cost of the player (400 ?). Personally, I wasn't happy with
any of the speakers that Reading HiFi have in that price range. I
ended up with a pair of Epos ES11s, from another dealer. There are
loads of amps in that price bracket.

I think Linn speakers tend towards low sensitivity, so you may need a
more powerful amp with them than with other makes.

I've not read the Hi-Fi press for a while, so wots this about Philips
dropping the bitstream? What are the current players using?

    re:-1

I think I've confused you. I meant that they've replaced the 840 (the
first bitstream) with the 850, not that they've dropped it altogether.

Can you recommend any other hi-fi dealers in the area?

    Thanks,

    RE:-1

Radford Hi-Fi - King Edward Court, Windsor have been good to me in the
past. When I purchased my speakers back in '86 they let me take three
pairs home for the weekend to aid my decision making (still didn't make
it that easy!!). Any decent Hi-Fi shop will let you take your existing
CD player in so you can listen to the amps and speakers with it.
