303.0. "Capstan motor in cassette decks" by HEAVY::LAW (Mathew Law, SIE (Reading, UK)) Fri Aug 09 1991 12:54

    Just a little question:

Is it usual for the capstan motor in a cassette deck to be running
continuously, whether or not a tape is playing? If so, why?

Just knowing that someone else's deck does this would be enough!
    Thanks.

    Mat.

the Pioneer deck that I had used to do this, I guess it's so that it can
get up to speed and try to maintain that speed consistently (for improved
performance).

Both Tandberg decks I have do this. Regarding the really hefty
flywheels they have (both are dual-capstan as well) it would take
a couple of seconds to get them up to speed. A JVC deck I had
previously had a switch that set the capstan motor running when a
cassette was put in. All these decks have at least two motors, but I've
also seen single-motor decks do this.
