300.1 | A common fault ? | WIKKIT::WARWICK | Trevor Warwick | Fri Aug 02 1991 18:48 | 7 |

I have exactly the same problem. I have a Mission tuner, and I notice
interference on the signal with my current CD player (Arcam), and with
my previous one (Phillips).

| Re -1
This is probably due to the CD giving off signals that the tuner is
picking up.. Shouldn't be a problem though, when do you play a CD and
listen to the radio?

| Do you have an internal or external aerial ?
You could always try the old trick of screening one component (CD)
by using an aliminum plate which you can eart.

fwiw, i have a pioneer old, cheapo tuner sitting on top

300.6 | thanks | SIOG::POCONNELL | Godot's been and gone! | Tue Aug 06 1991 10:02 | 9 |
| Thanks for the suggestions. I visited our local Audio 'Consultancy'
(you know, fancy surroundings, fancier prices) and his considered
opinion was that the DACs in the CD were causing the problem. He
claimed that the problem is worse again with the high-end transport/DAC
separates. What was his suggestion? Switch off the CD when listening to
FM (BTW the signal comes from the local cable company and for the most
part is only barely acceptable)

| At least he didn't suggest that the problem would be solved by the purchase of
a high-end CD...

| re: .0
I used to have a similar problem with my CD/Tuner, but it disappeared
when I installed an exterior FM aerial on the roof. Previously my
aerial had consisted of a bit of wire sellotaped along the wall of the
lounge. So perhaps the problem is proximity of CD player to aerial,
rather than the tuner itself?

| I've had a similar problem when placing a Sony personal CD player near a TV set,
resulting in a lot of noise/fuzzy picture on the TV (which has a rooftop aerial
mounting).
I just stopped using the CD when the TV was on. Do full size CD players also
cause this effect?

| I have my tuner on the shelf above my CD player, with only about 1.5"
space, and I don't have a problem with interference. But I also have a
roof aerial which gives a nice big fat signal into the tuner.
If .0 is only using the giveaway aerial that comes with most items, not
only will it be ideally placed to pick up the rf gunge from the CD
player, the aforesaid gunge will only have to compete with a feeble
wanted radio signal.
Whether or not the CD is only turned on when required, a good rooftop
aerial is a wortwhile investment.
