290.0. "Advice on new configuration" by EFGV04::LEE () Wed Jul 10 1991 15:19

[ This note is posted in both AUDIO and AUDIO_UK ].

  Does anyone care to comment on the configuration below ? After some
  listening comparisons (not that many), the salesman and we (well, actually
  the salesman mostly ...) has put together the following package:

     Speakers: V.VOX Aziza (A Dutch brand which I haven't been able
                              to find any reference to in either notesfile).

     Amplifier: Cyrus I (Presumely a series II, as this is 1991, and I can
                          hardly imagine they're still selling a 1984 machine).

     CD-player:     Mission PCM II.

     Cassette Deck: NAD 6325 (we only have old tapes, and don't want to make
                              recordings).

  In particular, the Cyrus I costs fl 875 while the Mission costs fl 1695
  (respectively approx US $450 and $850), and I was told that that's a
  disproportionate amount to pay for a CD-player compared to what we're paying
  for the amp).

  Thanks.

290.1HAMPS::IVES_JI've got a bad feeling, Mr Tracey!Wed Jul 10 1991 18:0011
    I would have thought that the Mission PCM II is a little on the old
    side . The Phillips 840/850 models or Rotel 865 I would have thought
    were cheaper and sounded better. The Cyrus I though wonderful can sound
    bright ( I know I had one and found that I just could'nt live with it
    and CD's), so maybe a "bitstream" CD player could help to smooth this
    out. The Cyrus is coming under some pretty stiff competition from the
    Pioneer a400 and the Marantz PM40SE, not to metion the various Musical
    Fidelity offerings (A1, B1, B2). I'm not anti mission, I just think
    that it can sound a bit bright which I personally can't live with.

    But like they say, one mans brightness is another mans detail !

Where are you? Does you have any reason to choose British products?

    I would agree about the CD player. The basic design is several years
    old - you must be able to do better than that.

    For CD player, I would suggest you to listen to the new range of Sony
    ES series of CD player , Rotel 855 or Philip range.

    As for the amplifier, I own a Cyrus Two, it is true that a bit too
    bright with the CD player but OK with tuner. I would suggest you listen
    to the ADCOM 535.

    Thanks
