287.0. "HELP: New A/V System" by MEO78B::PHILIPSEN () Tue Jul 02 1991 11:55
Hi,
I am looking at putting a total A/V package together for home use. I
am basing my whole system around a dolby prologic surround processor
came AMP and Receiver
I have come to the conclusion that a AM/FM Stereo A/V receiver type is
the go. I need assistance in determining which particular brand to
choose. I have been looking at th following brands.
AU$
YAMAHA RX-V1050 1799
RX-V850 1399
DSP-A1000 1999 (I know it has no receiver)
PIONEER VSX-DS1 2499
VSX-9700S 1799
VSX-5700S 1399
ONKYO TX-SV90 PRO 2200
TX-SV50 PRO 1499
SONY STR-AV1020 ~1000
My preference is for the YAMAHA range at this point but I could be
convinced otherwise. If anyone can enlighten me on these systems or
others I should be considering. Denon I beleive is available in
Australia but I haven't found any surround units yet.
I have talked to one dealer who recommends to match JBL TLX 18 speakers
as front main $999. Use a YAMAHA NS-C90 Centre channel speaker $249 and
then YAMAHA YST-SE10 $199 or JBL TLX 12 at $499 as rear effects.
Would some second hand BOSE speakers be a good idea?
I haven't even thought of the other components yet because I feel these
prices will keep me saving for a little while longer.
Of course I am considering a TV, VCR, CD player, Tape deck etc and will
gladly except advice on these items.
Other brand readily available in Australia are KENWOOD, MARANTZ, B&O,
NAKAMICHI, PETERSEN, SANYO, TEAC, RADIOSHACK/REALISTIC, AKAI, TECHNICS,
JVC, BOSE, PHILIPS. There are other brands but the trouble is they
are elitist or expensive.
All advice welcome especially that of facts and figures.
Regards
Dave

| If not, you may like to know that Akai do a VCR with a built in Dolby Surround
decoder, including an amp for the rear channels. You just connect the front
channels to the aux input on your hi-fi and connect a set of small speakers
directly to the rear connections on the VCR.
I bought one of these (cant remember the model number but it includes the number
77 somewhere!) about a year ago and am well pleased. I think the model has now
been superseded, so the new one probably has some sort of go-faster stripe.
Hope this helps

287.3 | YAMAHA DSP-1000........go for it! | UFHIS::JMASLEN | The wheels fallen off your day yet?! | Thu Jan 16 1992 16:52 | 11 |
| The kenwood 'sounds' better according to the reviews but the Yamaha
offers you both front and rear effects channels!
The Yamaha DSP-1000 is a great entertainment machine........I have one
onthe TV if you want to know more about it, look up the US audio notes
conference.
Be warned, this is not 'hifi', rather entertainment but ok for a couple
of hours and sure beats the 'hifi' TV's into the dust sound wise.
