Does anyone know the value and quality of a QUAD valve power amplifier & pre-amplifier combination that a friend of mine has been offered? I believe that the numbers are 33 and 303 although which is the power amp & which is the pre-amp I'm not sure. Nigel

The 33 / 303 [Pre/Power] is transister not valve. The last Quad valve amps were the 22 / II. The II was a mono valve power amp so you needed two. As for value the 22 / II have a collectors value so could be quite expensive but the latter 33 / 303 are probabably quite a lot cheaper though I couldn't put an exact price on them. Rik

I saw an add recently in Gramaphone #150 sterling for a 33/303 combination. I would personally go for the 22/2X2 valve Combination, usually retailing for around the same amount.

I've got these old workhorses gathering dust somewhere in New Zealand! They cost around NZ$1000 for a good pair, in UK I see them for around 150 pounds (NZ$450), in Germany, anything from Quad is overpriced (eg. Quad 22/II's for 1600DM's as opposed to 250 pounds UK [750DMs]in UK for a mint set). The 33 preamp is not really a dynamic amp (I tried updating the transistors and fiddled with splitting the power supply....added a second power supply...one per channel......no big deal/improvement, just a little only. The 303's on the other hand are nicer, especially when you buy another one and turn them into two 100watt monoblocs,. The amps are most stable when driving low impedance speakers like Magnaplanars, electrostats etc. A poor man's substitute for the arcwelding power amps from the USA that one generally spends 1000's on to drive difficult loads. At least you don't kill anything with them. If anybody suggests the 100watt Quad 402 to you, be careful as the Mark 1 version wasn't so stable.....it was also monoblocable to 200 watts! Definitely an improvement this monoblocing caper.........sadly the newer Quads can't be (306, 606 etc). Does all this remanicing from an earlier love.......I hope it helps you, remember, second hand quality is still quality. Wait long enough and they will also go up in price! cheers fjeff PS: check the selection switches and the filter switch on the 33 preamp, sometimes they get a bit noisy after a few years of heavy use, also leave the 33/303 permanently turned on night and day.....warmer sound.
