271.0. "ANTIQUE AUDIO/VISUAL PULSE GENERATOR" by TIS::GRUHN () Mon Apr 22 1991 18:25
I have to stretch some to justify placing this entry in UK_AUDIO
but it is the only way I presently have of reaching a reasonably
large gathering of folks in the UK. Mr. Moderator, please feel
free to delete it if you deem it inappropriate.
I have an antique pulse generator with both audio output and
analogue display of elapsed pulse counts. Uniquely it is
powered by gravity. The audio output is generated by a
physical impulse upon the rim of a solid state oscillator.
This output occurs hourly and increases by one count each
period until the count of 12 is reached. The cycle then
repeats. Now it should be obvious that the subject at hand is
an antique weight driven clock with hour strike. Specificaly
it is a Black Forrest Wag-On-The-Wall which recently Fell-Off-
The-Wall. It is similar to the familiar "Postman's Alarum"
which appears regularly in UK antique shops. Mine was bought
10 years ago whilst working in Galway, Ireland. The glass
broke in the fall off the wall. It is presently replaced with
a similar on available in clock parts supply houses here in the
States. The replacement, however, is not dished as deeply and
it was necessary to shim out the bezel so that the hands would
not rub on the inside of the glass. This is better than nothing
but not right at all especially since the pulse generator is a
very nice example.
I'm looking for someone who would be willing to help me locate
a suitable glass for the clock. I have the names and addresses
of a few suppliers of clock parts in England. I would be very
pleased and grateful if someone from UK_AUDIO would be willing
to help me track down the correct replacement glass. I will
send all the information as well as required dimensions. Either
a reply to this note or EMAIL on TIS::GRUHN will be fine.
Thanking all the many who are chaffing at the bit to reply,
Bill Gruhn
