265.0. "Mixing " by UNTADI::HORTON (Ludwig II's Lovechild) Mon Mar 25 1991 16:27

    Greetings

I've got two Soundlab "whatever" DJ type decks, with pitch control and
stop/start. I feed them into a PHONIC DJ mixer, 4 channels, cross fade
and a 5 channel graphic on each stero channel.

At present all this goes into my rather depalidated NAD amp (victim of
many many parties and cups of coffe down the back) which gives just about
    passable "thump" and "clang".

Any suggestions on an amp/speakers/cassette to stick the output from
the PHONIC into, or tips/info about this kind of set up.

Please, no "purist" replies - this is a "sunday morning 4am sweat box,
    who invited the police?" topic.

    Steve,
Give us a hint about what you want to achieve, and any
financial constraints. In the amp/speaker area, it will depend on
money, size of room, money, number of people, money, sound
quality, money etc. It also depends on whether you want
multi-usage kit - hi-fi that doubles as an occasional disco, or
    dedicated MC gear.
Also, I didn't understand where the cassette fits in. Your
note implies feeding the mixer into it. Did you mean that, or do
you want a cassette as another input along with the turntables?

    Mike.

Usage: Home - small living room and the ability to crank up the volume
           for other events.

Wonga: 200 squid-ish for AMP, ditto speakers

Cassette: Herring of the red variety - forget this please.

Sound: Like it either quietish or well-loud

    Cheers

Hokay! Here's some thoughts for starters.

Speakers: Have to compromise here. In your price range you ain't
going to get anything that is well behaved right through the power
range. Ones that I've heard/used that work well at disco level,
but aren't too bad in living rooms :--

    Tannoy DC1000 (around 200)
    Cerwin-Vega AT-40 (around 270)
    JBL LX33 or TLX16 (around 250)
    JPW AP3 (around 250)

Amp: You need something that isn't going to run into clipping and
blow the tweeters. Suggestion - Keep the NAD for home use, and buy
a separate stereo power amp for the other functions. Hi-Fi power
amps in the 100-200 watts/channel will break the bank
(Carver/Krell/Levinson = 1500+), so I'd go down to the local Rock
Shop, and see what they've got new or second hand in the disco and
PA ranges. With the rate that groups and disco's go under, you
could probably get a full set-up cheaply.
