Can anyone give me some advice before it is too late. This weekend i finally decided to start upgrading my Pioneer system which is a little old in the tooth(also as it was a stack system it has no additional inputs for CD which is something i will purchase with in the next 7 months) Anyway i went to all the shops in Reading and ended up walking out of B + B HiFi clutching a Dual 503-2 and a Onkyo A8150.I decided to keep my existing tape deck and speakers(i also have a Realistic graphic). Trouble is my speakers either don't seem happy(slight distortion) OR the amp is not very good. The question is can anyone give me some comments on Onkyo wether you actually have one or have heard about them before i go out and spend more money(maybe pointlessly) or is it the amp? Thanks in advance(hopefully) Stretch. P.S Should it be so hard to balance the arm on the deck.I followed the manuals instructions step by step(about fifteen times) but i feel i have it weighted too heavily.Following the instructions the arm ends up floating back towards the rest when lowered.

Is the graphic equaliser connected ? If so, try taking it out and see what happens. If you're not happy with how it's sounding, take the amp back to B&B. I don't now anything about Onkyo, but if it sounds worse than your current amp in the stack system, I think it's a good bet there's something wrong with it. Trevor

Hello Trevor, No the graphic was not connected. Last night i tried the Dual through my old amp and all was well so i can only assume it is the Onkyo causing problems.I originally thought the amp was to powerful for my speakers(40w) and the amps output(60w) although i was told this should not cause a problem as long as i did not crank the power up to high(i did not) by the guy in B+B.At first i had reservations about buying an amp i had not heard of but was assured that they are good and it also had a two year warranty on it(also my friend who was with me at the time told me a system his parents bought in about 1975 and had been ship freighted from Papua New Guinea to England without any adverse effects upon it was an Onkyo.Fairly bullet proof!) Now i am not sure wether to try another Onkyo(not so keen after my first experience) or to buy a different amp so all comments welcomed. Thanks again Stretch.

Dear Stretch, Why not just take the Onkyo back to B+B immediately and test it with their equipment? Onkyo's full line of components is readily available in the U.S. and is highly regarded in its general price range. But, of course, your unit could still be defective. I highly recommend either of Onkyo's CD players, Models 1700 or 2700, to someone looking for good stuff cheap, by the way. (2700 is $200 U.S.) Bill

Thanks for the info Bill. I will not be able to get back to the shop until Saturday so in the meantime i am trying to take as much advice as possible. The CD option is something i will be buying in six months time so your comments will be borne in mind(unless anyone has any comments). The salesman showed me an Onkyo CD player when i said i would be upgrading (but i cannot remember which one it was).It cost #170 and was comparable to a Technics which was #210 so definetly cost effective(if reliable, although they have a two year warranty instead of the normal one). Thanks again(any other opinions out there?) Stretch. |
