240.0. "More (clean) power to your system" by BELFST::COWAN (UNIX is not real UNIX; ULTRIX is!) Mon Dec 10 1990 16:54

I've heard the difference a power supply unit such as those available
for Pink Triangle, Linn, Alphason, Roksan turntables etc can make
(although, a PSU may also better control the turntable speed as well).

Has anybody tried a mains filter device such as the RADAR to obtain a
clean supply to rest of the hi-fi components? What sound differences
    are there?

Well, I tried a RADAR unit myself. I powered the preamp and power amp
from it, and would you believe it.... everything sounded clearer, bass
had more weight. This applied to all sources.

This certainly seems like a worthwhile upgrade, at approx 95 pounds.
Suggest you borrow one from your local friendly dealer and try it on
    your own setup.

    Have fun.

Does this make the system less prone to mains glitches too ?

On my system you can hear a clunk as the central heating starts up, and
also you can hear very large amplified clicks when removing a piece of
clothing that's just been ironed from the ironing board (the iron
usually gets plugged into an adjacent mains outlet to the system's). I
have been somewhat worried about the potential (good pun, eh) for
damaging something with all this static flying about.

How much equipment can be run off one of these fairly cheap (i.e. less
    than 100 pound) units ?

I am by no means an expert in this area, but... the RADAR unit I
borrowed had a row of LEDs (wee red lights) which lit up when the unit
    detected a mains glitch.

There seem to be many similar units on the market which are designed to
do slightly different jobs at different prices. The RADAR unit I think
can handle up to 1500 Watts of (mains) power. The PANDORA somewhere
around 80 Watts. Therefore you could probably put a power amp (and pre
amp and one other device) on the RADAR, but a power amp run off the
latter would most probably blow it (the PANDORA). Greatest benefit
seems to be derived form putting (pre)amp, CD player, and Tuner or
    Turntable on the mains unit.

A recent edition of one of the UK Hi_Fi mags (Hi-Fidelity, November?)
had an article on mains filters etc.
