238.0. "Dolby Surround Sound Processors" by PAKORA::GAITKENHEAD () Tue Dec 04 1990 05:18

    Hi,
I was wondering if any of you out there has had any experience with
Dolby Surround Sound processors. The reason I'm asking is that I'm
thinking of adding one to my AV system and would like to hear from
anyone else who either has one or is thinking of getting one.
From browsing in various Hi-Fi mag's I've only really noticed three
manufacturers ; Yamaha, Marantz and Sherwood (I recieved the Sherwood
catalog this morning and have not had time to read it yet).
My main question is whether the surround experience is worth the cost
    of these machines.

    Hi,

I am also in the market for Surround Sound. From what I can see the
latest YAMAHA's are the go. They have plenty of Power for home usage
and incorporate a receiver and AMP.

See note titled HELP: New A/V system. (I forgot number but I put it in
    on 2-7-91)

I don't know about specific makes, but it's worth confirming that the
boxes you are considering have the genuine Dolby chips in! These are
the only ones that will achieve the correct phase de-coding of the
surround channel. The surround info is phase encoded onto the L/R
master at the film dubbing stage, and the video master is a dierct
1 to 1 of the film master.

Some "surround" de-coders mimic the effect by a crude sum and
difference technique. A properly set-up system should sound nearly as
good as the original theatre version; don't set the surround channel
volume too high, as it will bleed some front audio to the surround
speakers, and destroy the subtlety of the effect. You should only really
be aware of the effect on plane passes etc.

If you need more info let me know; I used to work for Dolby Labs!

The actual machine has the Dolby Double D + Surround logo on it, so I
    would think it has.

Hi,

I've now managed to obtain a NICAM TV with a proper Dolby Surround
decoder (without the full Pro-Logic and it's extra centre channel).
The set's internal front speakers can be switched out, leaving the full raw
power of 20w+20w (probably peak rated at 10% thd) for driving the rear
surround speakers(!).

It sounds to me as though the TV's internal amp is not too bad, especially
considering my requirement of it; only driving the rear surround speakers.
Apparently the dolby decoded rear effects only span 100hz-7khz.

The bundled (Toshiba) plastic cans are a little crude. I'd like to replace
them with something sweet, small, efficient and preferably under 150 for a
pair.

I currently notice the rear ambience is OK, but get a little harsh when
asked to portray anything louder than a whisper.

I have noticed:
120 Heybrook Prima - What Video: great for AV, touchy on placement
	100 Mordaunt-Short CS-1 What Video: value-for-money AV speaker.

Anyone else set-up a surround system recently and would be prepared to
comment on the experience.

Regards,
Robert.
