231.0. "1-bit DACS ?" by HAMPS::IVES_J (I've got a bad feeling, Mr Tracey!) Tue Nov 20 1990 09:37

    Has anybody heard any of the one-bit DAC's that are starting to appear
    ?

    We now have DAC's from DELTEC, A&R (BB3), KELVIN ( #200 !!), MERIDIAN
    (203), and I'm interested in anybodies opinions/thoughts on these.

    My next upgrade is likely to include one of these.

    I find it interesting that on the other side of the pond they seem to
    go in for massively expensive/massivley powerfull compute engines e.g.
    WADIA, where all UK seems to be bitstream bound ?

    What we really need is a < #100 bitstream DAC kit, with an upgrade path
    involving additional power supplies, better components, op-amps, and
    who knows a valve/tube based analogue board.Any offers

    Also see note 175.0 for another opinion. I have to say that I bought
    the multi-bit 206, now only available as a 206B - guess what the B
    stands for.

    After some deliberation I went for the KELVIN, and I'm pleased I did.

    I could'nt justify the price if the DELTEC #500 when the KELVIN is only
    #200 and is based on broadly the same chip set.

    improvements ?

    Subtle but significant, I never realised how many CD's I used to
    unconciously wince on when they became too bright.

    Sound generally more spacious, relaxed and generally enjoyable.

    Also in the units favour is it's beatiful minute finish (it's around
    the size of one three tk50's laid end to end !)

    KELVIN are really small , and don't have a dealer near by so I ended up
    dealing with the MD/designer at his home ! Really helpful and friendly
    and generally a pleasure to deal with . Real enthusiasts.

    jives verdict : thumbs up for the KELVIN PDM

231.4What input types ? SAC::STEPHEN_IProduction Systems Marketing GroupFri Dec 14 1990 09:296
	What form of input connections does the Kelvin have ?
	I have a technics CD player with a fibre optic ouput,
	could I plug a fibre optic cable into the kelvin ?

             Singapore, as I am a technical guy, I will prefer to be able
             to do-it-myself, will you able to help me.

    I'll dig out KELVINS phone and address for you. By do-it-yourself do
    you mean import it yoursel ? I don't think they sell the DAC as a kit.
231.8Any review of this DAC?ZPOVC::PARRYCHUASingapore, a very small countryTue Apr 30 1991 16:538
    RE .7 : Thanks for your reply, I am interested to get one, how does it
            compare to DELTEC, MERIDIAN .

            I would like to know the postage charge from Singapore.

    Thanks

    well most reviews it has to be said prefer either the meridian or the
    new DELTEC 'little bit'. The KELVIN uses the original 7320 processor in
    single chip mode, like the ROTEL CD865.

    I like the KELVIN and for $200 (pounds sterling) was a worthwhile
    upgrade from the multi bit decoder in my Marantz. I'll still get that
    address for you
231.10Need TAS review of Melior DACZPOVC::PARRYCHUASingapore, a very small countryFri May 17 1991 03:1911
    1991 seen to be a 1-bit DAC war, now Melior bitstream using the all new
    Philip 7350 chip and Yamaha 8 x 18 bits oversampling filter and
    other.... The SP review said that the Melior DAC has a common problem
    in most of the 1-bit DAc and has no way to compare to Meridian 203.

    According to the dealer in Sinagpore said that the TAS review in the
    other way. I don't have the TAS, anyone out there has the TAS March
    copied and has the review of Melior DAC, please post here.

    Thanks
