229.0. "Re-tip a Troika ?" by HAND::LARSEN (Rob Larsen @BST) Thu Nov 15 1990 17:10

    Hi UK Audio Reader's ,

    Question:

    My Linn Trokia is getting a bit old these days...

    I can trade it in for a new one or,

    how about getting it re-tiped la Van Der Hul.

    Your comments please.

    Thanks,

    Rob.

229.1Linn won't do itCHEST::WATSONBack to monoFri Nov 16 1990 08:239
    Linn have just (yesterday) changed the rules for traiding in your old
    Troika (You know get 320-00 back - See 222.1).

    As for retipping it - Linn won't do it (All traided in MC cartidges are
    scrapped) and I'm not sure of the sound quality you'd get. I did here a
    very convincing argument against a re-tip - but for the life of me I
    can't remember it ... sorry.

229.2 ? Cantilever damage ??COMICS::FLANDERSDThe doctor is in ...Fri Nov 16 1990 09:229

    I heard somewhere that the reason for not retipping (from Ortophon I
    think) was that they couldn't be sure about invisible damage to the
    cantilever (stress etc.).

    I suppose they might also get cartridges for retipping which have been
    retipped before (etc. etc. ...).

    Another argument against retipping is that it isn't always just the tip
    that wears. The cantilever suspension can harden - depends on age and
    environment - and in modern centrally heated rooms this can accelerate
    and cause a cartridge to sound "worn" well before the tip itself wears out.
    Increasing room humidity with plants can extend the life a little if this
    is likely!

    I didn't think Linn scrapped used Troikas, as the body comprised around
    50% of the cost anyway, but I could be mistaken.

229.4Roxan do itCHEST::WATSONBack to monoFri Nov 16 1990 14:5310
    If I'd bothered to engage my brain before making my comments I would
    have added the following.

    	1. It was ASAKs that Linn were scrapping - these had horrible
    plastic covers ...

    	2. The Roxan MC cartridge (Sharaz (? sp)) IS retippable - by Roxan
    no less.

    So there is more to this than meets the eye (or ear).
229.5...and the coilsSCARP::BRIGHTI'm back!Mon Nov 19 1990 08:545
I was under the impression that when an MC cartridge wears out, it's
the coils that expire as well as the tip.

    Thanks Guys,

    Ive decided to get a new Troika. What has been said in the previous
    notes is along the same feelings Ive had.

    	Rob.

    	PS. A friend of mine is going to get his Troika retipped, I'll
        report on the results.
