212.0. "Speakers and Cartridge help." by JUNO::HAYES () Fri Sep 28 1990 17:51

Hi, I'm a new I.T. who'd like some help with upgrades.

FIRSTLY: I've a REGA3/AT110E and I'd like a new cartridge. My first
thoughts turn to something like the REGA BIAS or the LINN K5, as they
are both pretty cheap and are supposed to sound quite good.
BUT, is it worth spending a bit more on something like the LINN K9 or
REGA EYLS. I've read good reviews on all of these at different times
but wonder whether the extra money on the latter is really worth it.
Of course I'd listen before bying, but all suggestions are welcome.

SECONDLY:

The rest of my system is a ROTEL820BX2 and WHARFDALE DELTA 30's, the amp.
is fine but I'm looking for some more bass from the speakers.
I want to audition the following, and can't go much above 200 quid.
TANNOY DC1000
CASTLE DURHAM
WHARFDALE 505.2
MUSICAL FIDELITY MC1
JBL TLX14
MONITOR AUDIO 9
possibly ROGERS LS4a

Has anyone heard any of these in the context of my system
Any advice is much appreciated, cheers.

    re .0....

Any of the cartridges you suggest will be an improvement on the AT110,
but although the Rega 3 is very good, the benefits of an expensive
cartridge will not be apparent even in the excellent RB300 arm. This
may ultimately limit the quantity and quality of bass, irrespective of
how "bassy" your speakers may or may not be.

You need a lot more questions answering before changing anything other
    than your cartridge.

      re: .2

I was thinking of possibly listening to a LPT or Townshend Avalon with
my Rega RB300 arm attatched.

The thing is though, would the new improved front end sound a bit too
good in the rest of the system, that is, will the rest of the system
be able to show the improvements in the sound.

Although I am looking at this class of vinyl reproduction for the future
(as I am a bit of a vinyl junkie) I thought possibly the Rega 3 could
make do for a while.
Would you definately change the t/table first?
212.4Buy a Linn (and be done)CRATE::WATSONRik WatsonMon Oct 01 1990 14:0020
First an apology - most of this info. in this note is a few years out
of data - it's a while since is seriously listened to `budget' Hi-Fi.

I would tend to agree with Dave, putting an expensive cartridge in an
RB300/Rega-3 may be a bit of a waste. (Although I did once have a
    Karma/RB300/LK-12 system).

There is a certain level below which its not worth improving the front
    end - when I last listened a ``minimum'' Linn (LP-12) system had a
    Creek 2020 + MS-20s in (Steve take note...) I don't know how the ROTEL/
    WHARFDALE compare to this.

My advice - buy a K5 (or whatever). Upgrade (at least) the amp
(Assuming the ROTEL is worse than the CREEK - I don't know). Then go
for a Linn. The effect a LP-12 has on Bass notes is amazing - try
    listening to a Rega-3 + Naim + Isobariks...I know I have.

But above all listen and enjoy.

212.5It's all just a ploy!TASTY::JEFFERYTears of disbelief spilling out of my eyesMon Oct 08 1990 13:126
Yeah,

I tried a REGA, with Linn amps, and IsoBariks. It definitely sounded better,
but it also showed up all the faults in my previously faultless REGA!

212.6For the time being JUNO::HAYESTue Oct 09 1990 10:019
Well after some deliberation, I decided to spend my hard earned on
a target TT2 table and HS20 stands, after chairs and cardboard boxes, the
difference was pretty clear, and the sound is vastly improved. So for the
time being I'll wait a while before spending any more. Oh yeh, I also bought
a Linn K5 catridge which improves things a little on the AT110 although
I don't think the difference is that great, Worth the money all the same.
