    Hi Dave,
    
    	Please refer to my two notes within this conference regarding
    Bass Sub Woofer info. The Wilmslow CPP Bass sub woofer was bought
    in kit form and gave endless fun and frustration!. The actual construction
    is very easy , allowing for the fact that one can operate a soldering
    iron and follow simple instructions. It is the finish which is the
    difficult part that I found. However I now have a sound that suits
    me and a nice piece of furniture.
   	Wilmslow sell quality products which with a little care can
    produce a sound which is equal or superior to commercial products.
    I have heard most of their products and have been impressed very
    much!.

    I remember your notes. I was hoping there would be someone out there
    who had built some of the other kits, as I can't accomodate another

    	    Wilmslow Audio is only about 10 mins from the Warrington 
    Office, it's feasible to visit them over a lunchtime next time you 
    wangle a trip over here. I've had many dealings with them, mainly 
    for high power PA stuff, but occasionally for HiFi. I've never 
    built any of their HiFi speakers, but they do have some models 
    built up to audition. They have always been extremely helpful and 
    knowledgeable even in cases where they were actually talking 
    themselves out of a sale.

    Does anyone have the address of Wilmslow handy. I am located out in 
    Switzerland at the moment so can't readily get it. 
    
    I am toying with the idea of adding a sub-woofer to help out my Mission
    70 Speakers which, in the large room they are now in, are very light on
    bass. Rather than spend lots of money on something that may not work
    I thought I would experiment with kits.

    If you still have the catalogue in front of you. A few questions.
    
    1. active/passive. Is that active as in active crossover over active
       as in has built in bass amp. If so what the rated output.
    
    2. Do they list Crossover frequencies ?
    
    3. Do they list nominal impeadance
    
    4. Dimensions ? Howe big are these things (important for spousal
       approval !)

    Chris,
    
    	    WA's passive units have an 'appropriate' crossover built 
    in, so you feed your amp into one set of binding posts, the 
    crossover splits the signal, feeding 'sub-bass' to the drivers and 
    the remainder on to another set of binding posts to link to your 
    main speakers.
    
    	    Active means including an active crossover, not a built-in 
    bass amp. It is a WA proprietary unit - die-cast box with level 
    controls, gold-plated phono sockets, poweredm by a 'plug-top' type 
    power supply. (Phono interconnects not included)
    
    	    The only crossover frequency listed is for the CPP given 
    as 120Hz.
    
    	    All are 8ohm nominal except for the CDVC/16, which is 
    16ohm and designed specifically for the LS3/5a
    
    Dimensions.
    
    CPP and CDVC - 22.5" x 13.25" x 14.5"
    	           571   x 336    x 366 mm
    
    Super PP and DVC - 26.5" x 15" x 17"
    	    	       673   x 385 x 432 mm

    The dimensions include an integral stand/plinth on the PP and DVC 
    models, so the largest dimension is the height. On the Micro Bass, 
    the dimensions are h x w x l.
    
    I've also got a copy of a review of building and testing the Micro 
    Bass from Home & Studio Recording (May '91) which they paired up 
    with a set of JBL Control 1's. Pertinent info - First order 
    crossover set at 100Hz, 8ohm impedance, frequency range 35 - 100 
    Hz. The review is positive about the results, and the 
    construction.

A new entry in an old thread...

I recently bought a pair of kit speakers from IPL Acoustics, based in Westbury,
Wilts. Tel: 01373 823333. 

It is a small (one-man) operation, with a range of units from rear speakers for
surround-sound through magnetically-screened "centre" speakers and
bookshelf-size units to large floor-standing transmission lines. They also sell
individual drive units (prices look competitive with Wilmslow) plus other bits
for the speaker builder (like their own brand "supersound" capacitors for
crossovers). The catalogue comes with good descriptions of what's inside,
including measured frequency responses and sensitivity figures, etc. More
comprehensive than the Wilmslow catalogue.

Kits come as drivers+crossovers and other small components, through a couple of
stages to a full kit with everything except glue. they are available either as
bare MDF (my choice - veneered them myself) or cut from pre-veneered MDF. Based
on the unit I bought, they are solidly engineered. 18mm panels with a 22mm
baffle, plus extensive internal bracing. I can just about lift one of these
things single-handed - stands about 42" high on its spiked stand. Mine is a
three-way transmission-line with an Audax 10" bass unit and a couple of Morel
drivers for mid-range and treble.

The owner seems to have a pair of most items in the range for demo (by
appointment) and was happy to chat when I went there with a handful of favourite
CDs for auditioning.

I suggest that they are certainly worth a look/listen if you are seriously
intending to build new speakers. Building is easy, by the way - it is the
finishing that takes the time! Well, if you go for the veneer-them-yourself
route, anyway!
