158.0. "Suggestion Box" by AYOV10::BROCK () Fri Mar 09 1990 12:53

At the end of this month I will be looking to add something to my
Hi-Fi. In a quandary as to what. Looking for some suggstions as
to what people would do in the same situation.

    Current Setup

    		Systemdek IIX	(original Systemdek arm)
    		Denon Tape Deck
Celestion Ditton 33 speakers (13 years old)
    		Mission Cyrus Two Amp

Musical Taste	- Varied rock but like a lot of "indie" music
so like loud, bassy & distorted guitars.

    Options

o Invest in a CD (over 500 albums and
    						 counting !)

    		o Invest in a tuner

o Upgrade the Deck - new arm
    						- new deck (Linn Basik!)

o Upgrade the Speakers - but to what ?

Decisions, decisions. What would you do ?

    Invest in a CD player.

    A _good_ CD player.
158.2Linn Basik ?TASTY::JEFFERYWhat's the slipperiest thing you can think of?Fri Mar 09 1990 17:5210
I'm not so sure about the Linn Basik, the ones I saw at last years Heathrow show
were pretty ... well Basic!! They were prototypes though, maybe the real thing
is nicer.

My vote is for the Linn Axis, solid design, solid build quality, easy operation,
and Brilliant Sound.

Go for it!

Taking the question at face value, if it were me I'd upgrade the record deck,
spending about twice as much as I could afford on it. Then the speakers,
though no doubt few would agree with me here. I'd steer clear of a CD player
for now: CD players seem to be improving at such a rate that it may soon be
possible to find one that sounds quite nice for a reasonable price. Worth
waiting a while I think, especially as it'd allow you to concentrate on getting
the most from your LP collection.

But the important thing is, is there some specific reason why are you
considering changes? Is there something about the sound of your system that
you don't like? How *I* would upgrade this system doesn't matter - what do
*you* want from it that this system isn't giving you?

    Basik Rathole...

Well the Linn Basik is not exactly an Axis but it's not a bad mover.

Equipped with a Akito arm and in my case K5.

I bought it after comparing it with a Rega III. The main selling point
was the clearer sound and crisper bass, but its not my fault that the
Basik looks like an oil rig!!

As for the original question, if it sounds ok just keep buying the
    software.

All the alternatives stated are things I know I would like to do
to upgrade my system. Where I am struggling is in what order of
priority I should upgrade the components. It would also be helpful
as to any suggestions on what components to pick (e.g. Linn Axis).

There is not the variety of Hi-Fi shops in this vicinity that you
can go get demonstrations. The nearest is Kilmarnock and it has
limited stock. You then have to go to Glasgow and it would help
at least having a short-list of components that you want to
    find out more about.

I have always found it useful to read other people's suggestions
and it may point me in the direction of something I may not have
    thought of previously.

Thanks for all the input to date. My thoughts are now leaning towards
an upgrade of turntable and speakers.
