156.0. ">Small budget speakers<" by PEKING::GERRYT () Fri Mar 02 1990 13:40

    		> Small Budget Speakers <

I'm interested in getting some small (ish) budget speakers, and
    can afford about #120.

In the 'What Hi-Fi" for March, the JBW, Celestion C3, Wharfdale
Delta 30 and Toshiba 33's seemed to do quite well.

Has anyone heard any of these ?
Is there a dealer in Reading that can demonstrate some/all of these
    ?

Try the B+W "Vision" series. Reading HiFi probably have them, if not,
try Comic, ooops, I mean Comet.

Before I start I'd better say that I've never heard any of the speakers
you mention, but here's my $.02 worth anyway.

Speakers are probably the most variable component of your whole system
and consiquentley need a long time to test, in as close an environment
to yours at home, it's no good going to a departmental store standing
amongst the hustle and busle of saturday shoppers, you want to go
somewhere where you can relax and enjoy yourself.

Reading Hi-Fi is probably the best dealer in town, they've got two
special listening rooms and they can set up 'your' hi-fi for you,
consiquently you usually have to book a room in advance. I don't
know if they've got the equipment you mention, but they've usually
got a fair selection of stuff.

Reading HiFi is a nice shop. I've heard the Celestions and liked them.

I still like my Diamonds, and would probably recommend the 'Super Diamond' or
whatever it's called in preference to the Delta 30.

Reading Hi-Fi stock the Celestion 3: I got a pair there. I don't know about
the other models. They're a good dealer. They will suggest alternatives - and
not just the magazines' favourites - and try to set up a demonstration system
like your own so you can make an informed choice.

156.5Too late for DL4's ?FORTY2::GROOMTue Mar 13 1990 17:3713
If you go to Reading Hi-Fi they will try and sell you some Royd's for
about #110, they ain't half bad. I personally prefered the Celestion
Dl4's for about #140. (Well worth the addition from the C3's)

But as the 'Shipman law' of Hi-Fi purchasing goes - be very wary of
listening to stuff you can't afford.

But I guess you have got something by now?

    Alex.

PS. Don't forget the stands - approx #50

Do Reading hi-fi have the DL4's mark II. I've listened to the
Celestion 3 and they're not too bad. But I'm allowing myself to spend
up to #150 for a pair so I'm interested in the DL4.

By the way has anyone heard the new NAD speakers for around 150.

The review said they were good but Reading Hi-fi don't stock NAD so
they told me so I can't compare. Has anyone heard either of these two.

    	Thanks

Try and get a listen to the JBL TLX12 speaker too...it's got a nice
open sound, as has the SONY APM 121 ES.

I still haven't made my mind up yet, still auditioning !

That's where I got mine from back in November.

WELL.......IN THE END I MANAGED TO PICK UP A PAIR OF SONY APM 22ES
WHICH SOUND REMARKABLY GOOD. I'VE GOT A SET OF INDUSTRIAL WALL MOUNTS,
    AND FEEL A LOT HAPPIER.
