| HiFi Choice has reviewed some - about 5 models, I think. The reviews
are summarised in the back of the latest issue, which also has info on
back numbers.
I don't know anyone who's heard one yet, nor heard one myself. I did
read somewhere that the BBC prefer them to CD players, as they found
them to be more reliable for professional playback (lots of cueing,
etc.). The Beeb also use a lot of prerecorded DATs, as well as
archiving LPs and CDs to the new medium. You can add your own indeces,
etc., even when recording from an analogue source - great for studio
work.
If you get to hear one, howzabout posting a review?

Sounds like a good idea. I have heard that I should be able to pick one
up for 3-500 pounds in Tottenham Court Road....

I think that you will find that they are a bit more expensive than that.
There is an excellent review of the technology and various models available in
the current issue of 'International Musician & Recording World'.

| ....but you may need to travel, as I doubt your average High St. record
store will have them. Covent Garden Records (in The Smoke) specialise
in things digital and may stock them.
Why do you ask? Are you the first kid on the block with a DAT machine?

| Nope no dat player, I asked 'cuz I read somewhere that dat software was
unavailable. It was an article in a car stereo magazine trying to explain why
dat hadn't taken off in a big way in ICE.
was thinking of upgrading my car stereo (broken tape player)...
thinking is much cheaper than spending money!
do you know the exact location of Covent Garden Records?
thanks...

| I saw a copy of the Durutti Column's DAT at the record shop (recently changed
name) in Broad Street Mall (whichever one is near the Ramada) in Reading.
Tiny thing it was.

| does anyone know how a DAT recorder limits you to making only one DIGITAL
recording off individual CD's?
(by digital I mean straight from a digital output from a cd player & into the
digital inputs of the DAT recorder ie. without it going thru' a DAC)
thanks...

From what I've read, the Copycode device won't stop you making copy
after copy from a CD, rather it will allow you to make a copy to tape
from a CD (and maybe even good old vinyl) but then prevent you from
making another tape copy from your new copy (does that make sense ??).
In other works, it's to stop the DAT machine makers producing the
double deck thingies which will do tape-to-tape copies.
Anyway I think it's just some sort of fudge by the machine
manufacturers to get round the 'tape machines encourage piracy' lobby.

| I have Sony DTC-55ES Dat, Copycode works thus.
Source Route Copy Route Copy2 Route Copy3
CD Digital YES Digital NO
CD Analog YES Digital YES Digital NO
CD Analog YES Digital YES Analog YES
LP/TAPE Analog YES Digital YES Digital NO
In other words It will let you record as many copies as you like using
analog Inputs. But only one DIGITAL copy anywhere along the chain.

| yes, I know that only one digital-digital copy is allowed (is this true for all
dat machines?), but HOW is it enforced?
i wondered if the dat recorder had some sort of memory & could say
"not recording that one again" as soon as it picked up the first few bits off
the cd
nope, i've not got one, but am thinking about it...
cheers...

| re .-1
It actually puts a code onto the tape to say that it is a digital copy.
You cannot then make another digital copy off that digital copy. You can make
as many digital copies as you like of your CDs (or pre-recorded DATs) you
simply can't make a digital copy of that copy. This also of course prevents you
making a digital copy of a copy of a tape that you have made yourself so there
is a potential problem here if you are using DAT as the mixdown medium for your
own home recording.
The whole scheme is basically flawed and is really just a sop to the
record industry. This copycode protection is only fitted to domestic DAT
machines it is possible to buy professional DAT machines that don't have it
although these are about twice the price. Additionally for all practical
purposes doing an analogue copy to circumvent the code is apparently
indistinguishable in quality anyway.

That's almost, but not exactly, what I heard from a Denon rep. The
system is coded that is signals if it's a first generation DIGITAL copy
from CD (sample frequency). If you record your own DAT's from live
music for instance (or via the analog inputs) the sample frequency is
different, and this tape CAN be copied again digitally.
I heard the Denon DTR-2000 by the way, but the setup wasn't really cut
for direct comparison of source and recorded material. It sounded good
enough though (it should do so at fl.2500, 800 appx).
