137.0. "KEF 104 aB's replacement ?" by PEKING::GERRYT () Wed Jan 03 1990 13:19

Does anyone know what may be suitable wall mountable (?) loudspeaker to
    replace my KEF 104 aB's ?
The system is about 10 years old now and comprises:-
Technics 8022 amp (40 watts RMS)
Technics SD2 record deck with Shure M75ED or Grado cartridge.
Ferguson CD player (made in Japan - not Korea - not
    		10 yrs old!)
    		Technics 8011 tuner
AIWA AD260 cassette deck (1 yr. old)
Loads of spaghetti like cables going everywhere (enhances
sound and gives the cat some fun)

I have a pair of Videotone Minimax ' Mk 1's (made in Hungary)which are
also old now, and was wondering which of the new ranges of speakers would be
recommended, or should the lot go ?

Does anyone like KEF 104 aB's ? Does anyone want them ?
Is there anything around that gives similar sound these days?

    I have a limited budget of #150.
    Is it MISSION impossible ?

I thought KEF 104's were those massive really expensive speakers ???

There should be lots of speakers around that price range.

I'm very happy with my Wharfedale Diamonds, which with wall mounted shelves
would probably set you back about 120.00 (20.00 for the shelves). I think
Wharfedale still sell the Diamonds, and you might be able to get them cheap.

I prefer their sound to Tannoy Mercury 2's which are much more expensive (my
flat mate hasn't yet noticed that the Diamonds are now connected to his amp! -
see note 32.0,32.1 for configuration)

Dave Melton has Celestion DL4's which I also liked the sound of.

Hope this helps, over to someone else ??

Mark.

My new B+W DS2's are blowing the socks off their predecessors. Should
you wish a listen, drop me some mail. (I live in Sandhurst, Berks.)
