    Help!!

I have an ongoing problem with my set-up which I am trying to resolve
as cheaply as possible. I wonder whether anyone can offer suggestions
    to the cause and solution.

In the evenings I tend to get interference coming through the speakers
and/or the headphones. It is not hum or feedback but radio-ish,
as if a foreign radio station is being picked up. I have checked
the earths between equipment and mains etc to see if the problem
stems from there but no joy. The only two things that have made
any difference have been disconnecting the speaker cables from the
amp and also the tuner from the amp.

I am now at a loss as to what to do next.

127.1Hope you don't live near Crystal Palace.....BAHTAT::SALLITTDave - @RKG & ICI, 0642432193Thu Oct 05 1989 15:5812
Is the interference more apparent with certain sources selected?

If you live near a transmitter there may not be much you can do,
other than check that all interconnects are in good nick and correctly
fitted, and that your amp's signal earth goes to the mains earth
either via the turntable or direct.

I know how you feel; my preamp used to pick up Radio Moscow's english
service at night, until I sorted my interconnects and grounding
    out.

    Dave,

The interference is there no matter what source selected. All the
interconnects are the ones supplied with the various equipment except
for CD to amp which is a QED lead.

Forgive my ignorance but which one is the signal earth?

I live about a mile from Ally Pally which I understand still has
a transmitter in operation. Mind I am trying without luck to sell
    my house. Interested?

My next option is to borrow my brothers NAD3020E to see if that
causes the interference to be exhibited.

ps My interfence is more Radio Warsaw than Moscow

    Mike,

You'll have no problem getting the commentary on the game on Wednesday
    then!!

Nice to see you're still alive and kicking!!

    Cheers,

127.4You're going to have some work on....BAHTAT::SALLITTDave - @RKG & ICI, 0642432193Mon Oct 16 1989 15:0927
Maybe I can get a reply into this without getting "network partner
    exited" again.

Signal earth is usually a small screw stud next to the phono
connectors on the amp. The small wire along with the phonos from the
turntable should go there; this should be the only place where signal
earth and mains earth are common - in the turntable.

If the turntable has only a 2-wire mains connection, then signal
earth and mains earth never get connected, especially if all other
components are 2-wire also. In this case, run a seperate earth wire
back to mains earth at a socket from the stud on the amplifier.

If after checking this you still get interference, check all
interconnects for good connection, especially the earth or shield.
If the standard cables are the moulded type, replace them with good
oem cables like QED or Chord Co.

Make sure cables are tidy; more specifically, don't run high level
(power, speaker) cables parallel to low level (phono, other
interconects) anywhere it can be avoided.

If you still have problems your dealer or manufacturers may help,
or the Post Office have a department that specialises in tracking
    down interference sources.

    Have fun!

    Update!

I have worked around the problem of noise interference by buying
a new amp. I purchased a Music Fidelity B1 which appears to be noise
free. It is also a lot better sounding than my previous amp - Denon
    PMV300V.
