Has anyone out there any knowledge about Ruark Swordsman or Sabre speakers? I believe these two models use similar drive units, the main difference being in the cabinets. They cost around 200 and 300 pounds respectively. Naturally I shall audition these speakers myself along with MF Reference 2 and the Royd Eden. As you may see from my choices I require speakers that are small and will work well against a wall. I have a MF A1 amp and use both vinyl and CD. The CD is mainly for classical music. Any comments on the speakers, or suggestions of any other speakers I should listen to? I would rather stick to around 200 pounds, but may go to 300 pounds if necessary to derive a good enough improvement from my MS15 speakers.

......shouldn't the Ruarks be used *away* from the wall? Dave

I've heard Ruark Sabre and Broadsword speakers, but not the Swordsman. They sound excellent. Recently I've heard Musical Fidelity MC2, Epos, Linn Kan, Linn Sara, Celef somethings, and the Ruark's of which the Ruark's sounded best. I couldn't listen to the Linn Kan's at all (apparently you either love them or hate them), and the Saras were only a little better. I'll give the Sara's a second chance tho'. Farnborough Hi-Fi (no I haven't got shares in them) stock Ruark, Epos and Linn's and a fair selection of others and I noticed today that they had Swordsman's set up. What they have got which is apparently EXTREMELY important when choosing speakers is a single speaker demonstration room. If you audition your speakers using a comparator selecting a pair of speakers out of a pile of them, you will find that the speakers you choose will sound *totally* different at home. This may or may not be to your advantage - you just can't tell. You can only compare speakers properly when there's only one pair in the room. I've heard it said that Linn take things a bit to extremes and even recommend leaving watches with speakers (i.e. alarms) outside. Incidentally, Linn speakers are designed for use against a wall, as are a lot of speakers, but any decent Hi-Fi shop will be able to advise you best on this. I'll be getting some new speakers in the not too distant future and the Ruarks are already on my short list. Happy auditioning, Steve.

re. note 54.1 When I was auditioning through Ruark Sabres, their backs were about 12 - 18 inches away from the wall, as opposed to the Linn Kans and Saras which were about 1 - 2 inches away. I couldn't say what the 'official' recommendations are tho'. Steve. |
