42.0. "Let's get controversial...." by ERIC::SALLITT (A legend in his lunchtime) Fri Sep 02 1988 18:30

Would anyone like to comment on Deutsche Grammaphon's recent
announcement that their full price catalogue would no longer be
available on vinyl or cassette, and would be released on CD only?

The spokesman asserted that vinyl and cassette were no longer
profitable enough for full price, and that other labels would follow
suit. Those other labels approached (the article was in the Daily
Mail earlier this week) disagreed with DG.

    What do you think?

DG lead the way, as per usual.

It's not a great idea, but if this means that they can bring out
more lower-priced CD's, say by enlarging the Galleria range then
    I'm all for it.

But I've a CD player, of course.

Well, I too have a CD player, but I'm just not willing to pay the price
of a CD for something, when I can see no advantage in doing so. I have
only a slight interest in Classical music, and so the DG Galleria range
has been excellent value, and it was a surprise that initially, it was
only released on Tape & LP.

It doesn't surprise me, in that the classical market has been an
area where CD has really taken off. The predominance of Digital
recordings (and remastering) has helped in this. I recently considered
myself lucky in finding an "AAA" recording of popular Gershwin stuff.
I snapped that up, especially as it was cheap.

    My tuppence worth.

    Mark.

Great hope this policy can bring down the CD price as low as LP's.
    Let's wait and see.

BTW: Galleria CD's have been available for at least a year - maybe
    two.
