| I wnat some information about VTL amps and preamps. How are they
regarded in their "country of origin"?
|
10.4 | US VTL Reviews | USRCV1::THOMPSONP | Paul Thompson, Rochester, NY | Thu Dec 29 1988 22:40 | 19 |
| If th US is their country of origin, the Hi-Fi magazines have raved
about their performance. J. Gordon Holt of Stereophile has rated
the VTL 300 as the best sounding amp he has heard, over the ARC
300's. His only concern was that since the company is relatively
new, they haven't yet established a track record of performance.
I seem to remember that he experienced some problems with the test
unit.
The Absolute Sound reviewed the 100, 300 and 500 and thought that they
were all very good. They reported that these units provided the
best low end performance they had heard from a tube amp, bettering
all but the best solid state amps in this area. The Ultimate pre
amp was also well reviewed, but not as highly rated as the power
amps. Some raved about it while others thought it was good, but
not the best available. One comment made about the power amps was
that you could definitely hear a family resemblance throughout the
line. For more money you get more watts and more volume, but the
sound quality is consistent throughout the line.

An amplifier (and tuner) to fit between a Linn LP12/Basik/K9 and a pair
of Gale 401 loudspeakers. Even a recommendation on what to put there
would be welcome. Have heard that NAIM works well with the Linn
but will it drive the Gales?
Gary

10.11 | Oh, it's going to cost..... | MILBRN::SALLITT | Dave @RKG, 831-3117 | Tue Dec 05 1989 14:24 | 17 |
| Oh boy, you have a problem. Buy an amp that'll get the Gales to work
right and it'll show up the Basik in the worst possible way. Buy an amp
that won't show the source up but will let later improvements to the
front end through, and it won't drive the Gales right. A lot of
generalising there, but you get my point?
Even at their best, the Gales had some problems. My advice? Find a good
dealer to help, but consider changing your speakers as well - there are
many around 100-150 that will outperform the Gales these days. As far
as amps go, something like the Naim Nait, the Creek 4040 or Arcam Alpha
would allow improvements to the record player to show through without
showing its weaknesses now; I wouldn't spend more than 300 on the amp
- yet!
Listen before you buy.
Cheers....Dave

she only has AM on her car radio an its not fair.
She does not particularly want the kind of stereo which Cortinas

So if anybody out there has upgraded their system recently, and
has an FM car radio going spare, please give me a call.

10.24 | ST-S700-ES Sony tuner manual needed | ISIDRO::RUPEREZ | Jos Mara Ruprez - Soporte a CSOs | Thu Apr 18 1991 15:37 | 14 |
| I've had the opportunity to buy the good ST-S700-ES stereo tuner
from SONY at a very good price, since it was an ex-demo unit.
It actually cost me less than 50% of its original price, but it
also has some inconvenience, the guys at the store didn't know
where the manual was.
Does anybody have the same unit and would be so kind to send me

|
10.25 | | FORTY2::SHIPMAN | | Thu Apr 18 1991 16:32 | 22 |
| I've got one. I'll try to find my manual. Programming is easy. For the
presets, use up/down tuning to find a station, pick mono/stereo and IF
wide/narrow as appropriate to the signal. Press 'mem-set' (or whatever it's
called), then the numbered button for the memory you want to store the station
in.
Are you also interested in how to set the powerup sequence for timed recording?
I'm not so familiar with that but I think you turn the lock switch to
'program', then press 'mem-set' and the preset button for each successive
station you want on powerup (it's easier to do it than to describe it). It'll
remember up to four settings. Turn the lock switch back to 'memory' (I think
that's its name) and when you next power the unit up, it'll tune your first
selection; on the next powerup, it'll tune the second, and so on. You need an
outboard timer to use this, though, along with a tape deck that'll record on
powerup.
It's a nice tuner. Nice audio but it needs a good signal to get really quiet.
Worst features are the lack of memories (only ten) and the vicious mute circuit
when in stereo mode - a single crack of noise mutes the output for half a
second or so. One day I'll get in and try to disconnect the muting.

The price of Naim's CD is ridiculous, funny money. Now if Linn were to

| Re my ealier request for an English copy of Micromega Optic
instructions, please ignore! Apparently it was never meant for export
outside of France and Belgium, so the user guide never was printed in
English. So, back to the drawing board....
I am told by the importers that the Optic is based around the Philips
582 chassis. As such, a remote control for the Philips 582 should work
with the Optic, and the user guide should also apply.
Does anybody out there have one of these things who could:-
1. Send me a photostat of the user guide,
and
2. Give a part code and a source for the remote control?
(Yes, I *know* the Linn Kairn's remote should work with a Philips
chassis, but I can't afford a Kairn yet....;->)
Thanks in advance.
