848.0. "Chicago Rock Cafe" by KERNEL::HOGGAND () Tue Mar 07 1995 17:20
Well after several visits to CRC, I have to revise my opinion.
It's actually pretty good; music is a good mix of 60's - early 80's and
the some video-based stuff. Drinks are a a tad on the pricey side, but
not too much for a club: Expect to pay 2 quid for a pint.
They have one member of the bar-staff trained
in cocktail making and he is competent enough (on Thursdays, cocktails
are half-price before 10:00pm).
You can eat there, but several people I've spoken to have said that the
food is none too impressive.
Getting in can be a problem. During the week (Monday to Thursday) the
dress code is relaxed, but tatty clothes are generally a no-no. Friday
and Saturday blokes must wear a collar, be it a 'grandad' shirt or a
top. Rugby shirts are out (and just as well). No trainers, big boots or
ripped jeans. Women have slightly less problem; no big boots.
Having recognised half the bouncers either from working at or going down
the gym, trouble should be quashed fairly quickly - they're pretty good at
kickboxing.
Not a bad place all round, but they constantly show "Police Stop" and
"Yov've been framed" on the TV's.

| Some comments:
There are not enough bar staff after about 08:00
The Cloakroom doesn't usually open till after 09:00 - why?
The dress code rules are ridiculous - a friend of mine was turned away
for not having a collar - he was wearing a role-neck sweater - he went
home got changed and we got in (having had to pay for the privilege as
it was getting late) - when we got inside there were people in
T-shirts. Also you can be waiting in a queue and the bouncers blatantly
let their 'mates' in ahead of you.
I have eaten in there and found it quite good - it's cheap if you have
kids - they can have burger, chips, drink and ice-cream for not much more
than the cost of a pint or for a 'kids club meal' in squalid surroundings
at MacDonalds. The Cajun chicken is not too bad and the adult burgers are
big and tasty.
On Sundays between 19:00 and 22:00 John Smiths and Fosters are a pound
a pint - if four on you have a meal on Sunday you get a free glass of wine
each and one meal is free. I'm not sure if how long these offers will
run so check before you go.

848.2 | Still, it's handy if you're single :-) | KERNEL::HOGGAND | | Mon May 22 1995 23:18 | 7 |
| Well, after a couple of months of the 'Chicago' experience....
It does get a tad boring. Good to start out there before moving on to a
pub of your choice.

| I entered the Champagne draw and got a letter back saying that I didn't
win, but if I quote reference number 22001 when making a booking, I'll
get 25% discount off the total restaurant bill (excluding drinks)
regardless of party size.
