    Jo,

    Chineham Beer Festival begins at 7.30 Friday 5th, continues from 12
    noon - 11.00 Saturday and, if there is any beer left, 12.30 Sunday.

    I believe the cost is 2.50 (which includes a Chineham Beer Festival
    Commemorative glass) and you pay at the door. I am not 100% sure of the
    price of the ales, but I think it will be 75p a half.

    For anybody else who may be interested, especially people with kiddies,
    there will be live music Friday night and all day Saturday. On the
    field during Saturday afternoon there will be:

    It's a Knockout, kiddies roundabouts, horse rides, karate display, face
    painting, bouncy castle, ball pool, Charity Tombola (some excellent
    prizes), children's lucky dip, & Kiddies Entertainer.

    There will be some great real ales, so should be a good weekend!

    Angela

    Although the club serves on draft:
    Carling, Heinekin, Stella, & another strong lager (Tennants Export?)
    plus large selection of bottled lagers.

    Draft beers in the club:

Oh I dunno, I wouldn't look forward to seeing me there if they sell that lot!

I've heard this band are very good, and hear a tape but has anyone seen
them live?

It's funny that the names of these ales seems to tell you
a lot about the people who drink them! I think I'll stay
in and watch Brookside.

Wednesday's when it starts at 8.

So can someone put us all out of our misery and tell us
what the festival was like please? I actually went out
myself and ended up missig Brookside after all.

Well the Norfolk Nog came second in my book only to the Headbanger.
Nice selection, nice beers, damned good idea having the little tickets
as beer vouchers.

Ian, you missed a good session as the state of yours and my mate Trevor on
Sunday probably showed (and he didn't join us til we'd been tehre 5 hours
already)

The BBQ was great, 2-50/steak sandwich that was good, burgers nice not crappy
processed ones 1-50 and real sausage in real roll with mustard a squid.

Beers were good though I was dissapointed I couldn't keep on the Headbanger,
or the Norfolk Nog as they both ran out towards the end (still I did my bit
to help that).

The band were appropriate for the do to doing such pop-classics as The Irish
Rover, She'll be coming round the mountain (smutty version) a couple of
Mike Harding ones, Wild Rover, Flower of Scotland (reflection on the beer
Paul C sang along), Teddy Bear's Rave-Up (to the tune ofteddy-bears picnic
but a bit ruder) and lots of other sing along with the drunkards type
stuff...

Beers were good, (did I mention that yet?)

The only improvement I would have made is having the beer festival in the tent
out the back so people could sit on the grass during the afternoon and maybe
not having the it's a knock-out stuff going on on the same saturday - it
nearly drove us away - you go to a beer festival to mellow out and chat and
have a nice time not have thousands of screaming brats everywhere, then again
maybe it's as well the beer stuff was in the hall away from all the rest.

Oh and the commem. glass isn't very exciting (t-shirts need to be something
other than some iron on letters on a plain white t-shirt to sell next
year too - maybe someone at chineham could ask Hatchwarren where they got
theirs done.)

NB: next beer festival: Overton in 2 weeks time.
    next after that: Hatchwarren Octoberfest is being rumoured to be going ahead..
785.17COMICS::FISCHERLife's a big banana sandwichMon Aug 08 1994 15:117
If there's a lager festival with vegetarian barbeque
coming up soon then I think I could be persuaded to
turn the TV off and come along. Does anyone know of such
an event?

785.18Not bad for a local bash!DRSPC2::WORTH_LMon Aug 08 1994 16:067
As already stated, not a bad do! My only disappointment was that on Friday night alot of the
beers that I wanted to try were not on. I'm told this is because last year they ran out, so
this year they held barrels back to ensure that there was beer for punters on the Saturday
sessions.

Not bally bad for a local bash though.
785.19ARNIES::SMITHP1blah blah prior approval blahMon Aug 08 1994 16:5228
	This was better than the Hatch Warren one in a few ways...

	1) The food was streets ahead, the burgers and sausages were
	   absolutely Yum Scrum!

	2) The beer seemed to be in really good condition.

	3) Liked the kiddies entertainment, which is non-existent at
	   HW.

	Negative Points...

	4) Agreed with Jo that the actual beer festival bit should have
	   been set up in a marquee around the other side on the grass.
	   I'm sure there were people who didn't even realise there was
	   a beerfest going on in that back room, as it was only signed
	   from the pavement and not the car park.

	5) Thought the prices were a bit high at 75p per ticket, although
	   I can't grumble at the quality. Also agreed with Jo's comments
	   about the glass. It was a bit un-imaginatively designed. Didn't
	   see the t-shirts - even the staff weren't wearing them !

	6) The description of the beers left a lot to be desired. I'd
	   rather be told about about the appearance and taste, than the
	   county it was brewed in. I think the author was quite proud
	   of all the Hampshire beers on the list !

I thought 75p per ticket = 1.50 a pint very reasonable for beer of that quality.
Particularly good if you focussed on the stronger ale's which sell for a lot
more in real ale pubs.

It was even better value on Sunday when they were selling the left-overs for
75p a pint!

I only went on Friday night and didn't enjoy the Folky band very much. It was
empty compared to last year and there was less atmosphere. However the beer
was very good which was the reason for going. Definitely my favourite do in
the Chineham calendar.

Saturday depended on your taste in silly beer festival
songs as to whether the atmosphere was good but I thought it
was ok....

785.22Some points answeredMOTH::CLARKSON_AWed Aug 17 1994 12:3827
    I am pleased to see more positive comments on the Festival than
    negative!

    I will attempt to answer some of the points raised.

    The reason the festival was held in the Hall and not outside was because of
    security reasons (cannot leave beers in marquee for 3 days!)

    We held It's a Knockout over the same weekend because Chineham Village
    Club is a "Family Club" so thought had to be given to "non-beer"
    drinkers. All the outside activities were to raise money for our
    Charity (Limington House School for special needs children). The
    outside events raised over 1,600. So it was a worthwhile cause.

    I agree entirely that the glasses were not too good - this has been
    noted for next year. Also the T-shirts will be improved upon for next
    year.

    Unfortunately we clashed with the CAMRA Festival in London so we lost a
    lot of our custom to them. Again, hopefully next year our timing will be
    better.

    If you enjoyed the BBQ - come along to our next "BIG" event "Fireworks
    Night" on 5th November - freshly made sausages and burgers will be on
    sale then.

But will there be any beers :-)

Must mention incase I forgot before the burgers and sausies were
impressively *real* compared to how that type of food normally tastes.

(Steak was nice too)
785.24Fireworks/beer!LARVAE::CLARKSON_AThu Aug 18 1994 10:326
    Beer Tent will be erected on the side of the club building plus the
    back bar will be open for non-members. There obviously won't be the
    large choice of real ales offered at the festival but there will
    definitely be plenty of beer!

785.25COMICS::FISCHERLife's a big banana sandwichTue Aug 23 1994 14:184
By "freshly made" do you mean that they will be freshly cooked,
or that you will have an army of volunteers manipulating minced
meat, onions, chalk, eyes, hooves and whatever else that may be
found in such meat products, into sausages and burger shapes?
785.26KERNEL::COFFEYJThe Uk CSC Unix Girlie.Wed Aug 24 1994 13:125
Didn't taste like there were many hooves or stuff in the ones the other
day, I'd say mince beef, onions and maybe some breadcrumbs and egg to
bind them, then again I had tasted a lot of the ales by the time I
got as far as a burger.

785.27Easter Beer FestivalLARVAE::CLARKSON_AMon Apr 10 1995 11:532
