760.0. "Good financial advisor wanted.." by KERNEL::HANNANS (Things to make you go MMMMMMMMMM) Wed May 25 1994 11:52

    Hi all,

can anyone recommend a good Financial Advisor, who is not
"tied" to any insurance comany etc.. Also (I know this is asking a lot,
if not impossible) but I would prefer one who is honest and will not
recommend something that not just earn him a big commision.. i.e have
my financial welfare in mind and not his...

Not a lot to ask really?... or is it?

      Cheers

         Steve

I used Harris Walters (Corner office, above printers by traffic lights
in Winchester St.) and found them very good with tax issues. If its
investments you want then I cannot comment.

    Steve,

I have Bob Hearst of Roger Morris & Co and they're very good and
always give advice that is impartial. As an example, my wife started a
personal pension plan with Norwich Union and then a few months later
landed a permanent job with DEC and was considering joining the company
pension scheme. They compared both pension plans for her and recommended
she drop the NU scheme even though it would cost them money (loss of
commission). The advice on investments has been the same. (ie impartial
and not biassed towards things they sell themselves)

You could try several and "average" the results. When my other half
took the package a few years back, we had some nice friendly visits
from the bank, the building society, etc. All obviously had something
to sell, and where all of the messages intersected, we decided they
were probably "right". What was most useful was the copy of the
questions they asked us - make sure you keep a copy. Then when you see
the next one, ask them any they missed. The advantage of talking
to these people were that they were (a) free, abd (b), came to our
house when we had the time and not the other way around.
