| Apparently there's a sale this weekend somewhere in Basingstoke where
stuff like this is for sale wickedly cheap (not meaning to under cut
anyone just doing everyone else a favour :-)

Any more hints as to its location??

| Is it one of these bankrupt/surplus stock auctions in a Hotel?
They give the starting prices for stuff in the ads but the prices rise to more
ordinary levels when bidding starts. Especially if your as inept at
bidding as I am I usually out bid myself.

| Apparently there's an ad in the Gazette and the event is at the Hotel
at the Aldermaston roundabout.

| I didn't remember it being an auction tho...
Sale is the way it's billed I think.
2 entrance fee... a few loss leaders and lots of other
stuff.....
(Is this where I stitch Jeff by saying it was him who mentioned it
and knows all about it :-)

750.6 | I saw the ad too | WAYOUT::CLARKE | | Fri Apr 22 1994 09:21 | 11 |
| Yes it is at the Hotel on the Aldermaston roundabout.
The small print in the ad also says that due to the low price of the goods
some items will be sold in lots.
I believe that these events are very popular, I drove past the other Hilton
when one was on there and it was big time queues.
If I wanted Sega I'd rather buy from the base noter.

| I was intrigued, and went there. It was rubbish!
They herded lots of people in, where this guy told us all that this was a
sale, not an auction. This meant that the goods went to the first person
to ask for them.
I was interested in a reasonable NICAM VCR for less than 50!
He would put lots of goods together like: Sega Megadrive, SNES, Toaster &
Kettle, and say "Who would like this for less than a tenner?". He then
sells it to someone. These goods were supposedly new, although the boxes
looked very tatty.
He did this a couple of times, until he revealed what he really wanted to sell.
This was a collection of goods like: Saucepan set, car radio cassette, Midi
system, watches, and others grouped together for 250. He didn't actually say
it was 250, and a lot of people thought that a TV & Video were included in
the price.
I found the whole thing thoroughly unpleasant, and was disappointed that none
of the items advertised were available.
Mark.

| Sounds like a market stall in the hotel. There's a write up in the
Gazette, they won't be going back to that hotel. There was a mention
that it might be investigated if enough people complain about it.

| Go to several of these. You will be amazed how many times the same few people
buy the same things (ie the bunch of goodies for the tenner). Probably
explains why the boxes are tatty!
If you do try and attend more than a few, they soon notice and use various
forms of insult to keep you out. There used to be several of these in Oxford St.
in London in the late 70s (there - gave my age away!) and it was fun to get
barred - something to do at lunchtimes...

| Well, the same story made last weeks Newbury Weekly News. Sames
like the same group touring the area...

| Can someone just summarise this then? ie If I see an ad
saying I can get a Sony Nicam TV for 125, is there any
chance of me actually getting it or should I stay at
home?

| .7 seemed to summarise nicely the whole unpleasant business.
I wonder if the base noter ever did sell his Sega with all the distraction in
this topic.
