John Arlott was an interesting guy even aside from the cricket commentary stuff. He was a policeman for about ten years before the war & among other highlights of his life were fielding as 12th man for Hampshire, writing poetry, producing poetry programmes on the radio just immediately post war & being a friend of Dylan Thomas. He was also a renowned wine connoisseur & wrote on the subject for The Guardian. He was born in Basingstoke, lived much of his life nearby in Alresford & moved to the Channel Island of Alderney on his retirement. Nigel |
