686.0. "John Arlott?" by DECUK::les (The Software Lifeguard) Wed Sep 08 1993 19:09

Question: Who was John Arlott ... and what did he do to deserve a mention
on the login to this conference?

Just curious.

    Shame on you Les.

Have you never heard of CRICKET and the BBC.

Apart from being an author, and a BBC radio commentator on ye olde
sporte of leather on willow, he lived hereabouts as well.

Talk to Ian McGaughrin/Richard Hough or any member of the team that
just returned the Crescent Ashes back to this building.

John Arlott was an interesting guy even aside from the cricket
commentary stuff. He was a policeman for about ten years before the war & among
other highlights of his life were fielding as 12th man for Hampshire, writing
poetry, producing poetry programmes on the radio just immediately post war &
being a friend of Dylan Thomas. He was also a renowned wine connoisseur & wrote
on the subject for The Guardian. He was born in Basingstoke, lived much of his
life nearby in Alresford & moved to the Channel Island of Alderney on his
retirement.
