680.0. "VNEWS news server" by ROCKS::HOBBS () Thu Aug 26 1993 12:58

Does anyone know who maintains the DECUK nntp news server for VNEWS?

I'm sure its someone in B/stoke but I don't know who.

Thanks.

Sorry no. Try NNTPD2. This server is much quicker and carries more feeds.

Try Les Carleton or Stephen Carpenter.

Both are in the Unix group in the Basingstoke CSC.

WHAT??? How can connecting to Colorado Springs, and getting your news
from there be faster than getting it from Basingstoke?

BTW: nntpd2 carries 4874 Newsgroups
     decuk carries 8078 newsgroups

It supprised me somewhat. NNTPD2 carries several groups that DECUK doesn't. But
as for the speed, NNTPD2 appears to rescan, save, etc several times faster than
DECUK.

Forsan is in DEC park 1.

Thats because its caryying less groups.

If you let me know which groups are missing, then i'll be happy to add
them. Provided they're not in the alt.binaries.pictures.erotica
heirarchy, which are of course highly illegal to receive or transmit
in this country.

680.7The reason I asked...ROCKS::HOBBSTue Aug 31 1993 12:4221
Let me tell you why I asked the question in the base note
(since a few experts seem to being replying).

I'm currently using DECUK news server and the version of
VNEWS I'm using has for a second time refused to add new
groups saying "too many new groups". Not only that, its
takes around 20 minutes for VNEWS to go through the
NEWSRC file every time I start it up. This is just too
long and consequently I have not posted anything for
months.

I'm currently running VNEWS in batch mode overnight to
read the groups I'm following and I've tried hacking
a bit of DCL to post via batch but its not as easy as
a five minute job so I've had to shelve that idea.

Anyone got any solutions (and no, I don't want to
change to Unix to solve the problem!)

Thanks in advance,
Mike

I already get the ones I actually want Some of the Radio amateur groups didn't
appear. It is the speed I am really after, which NNTP2 gives me.

I'm not familiar with VNEWS, however, I did see something about this
in the News Backbone conference (I didn't read the string, but I
belive it was to do with performance problems on VNEWS). Do you have
the latest version of VNEWS? (CLOVAX::VNEWS I think is the conference)

decuk is a large, heavily loaded machine. News is just on of the many
jobs it does. Many of the performance problems we get are due to
unfinished DECnsr backups from the overnight runs. Other problems are
down to network link between Basingstoke and Reading being an Internet
Portal for IP, which is a hopeless underconfiguration. Are you using
IP, BTW, or DECnet?

Shame ... mxrn is just sooo nice :-)

BTW: We currently have these rec.radio.amateur groups on line

rec.radio.amateur.misc 0000045331 0000000001 y
rec.radio.amateur.packet 0000006218 0000000001 y

rec.radio.amateur 0000000008 00001 y

rec.radio.amateur.equipment 0000000504 0000000001 y
rec.radio.amateur.homebrew 0000000567 0000000001 y
rec.radio.amateur.space 0000000200 0000000001 y

Which ones are we missing?

I wouldn't have thought using NNTP2 is such a bad thing, Colorado where
the machine is is 7 hours behind the UK, so largely idling when you're
    all reading news groups,...

The radio related groups that I try to follow are shown below. This is just 14
grouos out of 43 that I subscribe to. It is the speed that NNTPD2 gives me that
I am interested in.

BTW Les, alt.pic.WHAT? I dodn't remember seeing those on NNTPD2 :-)

Thanks,
Simon

mxrn has been ported to VMS (VMS forever !!!!)
and damn fine it is too

much better than VNEWS

although it still takes ages to start up it reconnects and rescans
automatically so I start it up at 8:30 ready for when I get in

We have all these groups.

The article numbers are generated locally and are server dependent.

If you want a quicker server with less groups try betty.uvo.dec.com,
its being configured to be a fast local news server for viables, it
won't carry the huge overhead of the geographic and university groups
that decuk carries by default. We can't cut the number of groups that
decuk carries because its one of the main news relay points into
Europe from the US.
