600.0. "Concert Hall??" by LARVAE::BEALE (Security is a Thumb and a Blanket...) Fri Nov 20 1992 14:34

What, No comment on the Basingstoke Concert Hall??

I was just driving aroubnd Alencon Link and there this great building
site with the hoardings announcing 'Basingstoke Concert Hall'. Is there
any one with a Gazette or some thing that knows whats going on? How
big? How many seats? What sort of concerts??

C'mon locals, persuade Harvey that there is life in Basingstoke.

In "food on Potters Walk", they had a small stand showing what the
concert hall would look like. I think it is a bit ugly, but like the
idea of a concert hall, to liven up that area of town. I reckon that
the area around the train station, and london road are the most
attractive bits of Basingstoke Centre, and need some focus.

However, I think the concert hall will need a lot of good marketing, and
management, to keep the momentum going. They will have to resist the
temptation to host darts or snooker!

If it is done right, then it could be a good draw for Southampton,
Winchester, Reading & Camberley area.

Does anyone know what sort of "concerts" they'll be putting on there, or
what the capacity would be? I'd hate to see Basingstoke DC waste their money
on another high price, low usage, high "quality" (like the National Theatre)
institution which tries to improve Basingstoke's status, but does little for
the people of Basingstoke

Not Basingstoke then?

BTW: Has anyone heard those really naff adverts for Basingstoke's shopping
     centre on the radio?

There has been loads of info about the new Concert Hall in the Gazette
in recent weeks. I can't remember exact details but it sounds as
though it will be about the same size as The Hexagon in Reading and
will be used for similar shows.

The actual design of the building IMHO is disgusting - far too modern
    for my taste.

600.4Seen the Crane!!!!SQGUK::LEARYMon Nov 23 1992 21:118
Has anyone seen the Christmas lights on the crane at the site.

There are even better than the ones you see on the cranes in London - I
think the best I have seen in Basingstoke was a Christmas tree stuck on
top of the one at Churchill Plaza and that was a few years back.

Well, yes I meant that it would also be a draw for Basingstoke as well.

Only the apathetic residents of Basingstoke will decide for themselves
whether they want to use it.

I probably wouldn't go to see Classical music there, but I would like
to see Rock Concerts. It would be incredibly convenient.

I'm sure that they will succumb (like the Hexagon) to Snooker & Darts
though!

Cheers.

600.6What can be wrong with it?AITCU::ILESMike Iles - UK Alpha Resource CentreTue Nov 24 1992 10:0514
The main auditorium will seat 1400 people but it can be reconfigured
in a number of seating arrangements (boxing and snooker have both
been mentioned) and will have tunable acoustics to match. There will be a
smaller hall for a few hundred and some 'meeting rooms', plus a restaurant
and external booking office which will work in conjunction with the
    Haymarket (currently being refurbished).

They aim to stage all kinds of events there and already have bookings
for some recognised orchestras - Bournemouth Symphony springs to mind.

I'm not a Basingstoke lover particularly, but its a definite step in the
    right direction....

So, It's actually getting built at last? Whereabouts is it?

I remember all the lobbying that was going on around 4 years ago.
I bet the Choral Society will be pleased to have a proper venue instead of
    using Park Prewett hall.

Its in the space between Victory (?) Roundabout and the shopping centre
underpass. There was a gap between the new building with the twin towers
anmd the shopping centre itself.

At least its near to the central car parks.

I've got a pamphlet advertising "The Anvil" which says that the opening date is
the 3rd of May. There are three open days (30th April, 1st & 2nd May) when you
can go on a free tour of the building.

The pamphlet (I got mine when I bought a CD from WEM) also has a program of
events up the the 31st of May. Looks like there'll be all sorts of stuff going
on there, from the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra doing the gala opening concert
on the 3rd to "All-Star American Style Wrestling" on the 24th to the English
National Ballet on the 17th & 18th.

The highlight for me is Tull's 25th Anniversary Tour on the 29th of May (14).

I'm pretty sure tickets can be bought for all the shows now (telephone 844244
or in person at the temporary ticket office at 2a Church Street - before April
9, after that at "The Anvil" itself).

Cheers,
Steve.

Trev,

Rain Man isn't about rain though. It's about two brothers,
one of the is autistic, the other is a bit of a Jack-the-lad.
After getting to know his autistic brother, he mellows out
and becomes a nicer guy - a bit like Regarding Henry I
suppose!

    RE: Rain Man
I put that in to see if anyone actually reads my notes and because I
couldn't think of any other precipitation related films.

"Regarding Henry I" is that one of Shakespeare's early sitcoms. I'll
watch it when it gets to "Regarding Henry VII" lots of sex, violence,
    religion and some good jigs.
