595.0. "Help!! - A last ditch attempt to let my car R.I.P" by KERNEL::CHOPRAA () Thu Nov 05 1992 09:45

This is a copy of a note in the cars_uk conference #1941.

I don't know whether this is the right place for this note, but i'll
post it any way.

A couple of weeks ago (Thursday 15th October) I was involved in a hit and
run accident. Basically somebody drove out of a petrol station, quite
fast, into the back off my car. I was waiting stationary at the Golden
Lion roundabout near Viables in Basingstoke. The force of the impact
pushed me into the roundabout just missing a cyclist and another car.

By the time I had realised what was going on, the other car had done a
U-turn and shot off.

This all happened at about 10pm so there was a severe lack of witnesses.
The only information I could get was that the car was a T-registration
blue MkII escort.

The petrol station was one of about 5 in the country (for this company)
that does not have video cameras.

I went to the police station and the only thing they could do for me
was to say to me
"I'll file your report and you'll become another statistic"

					(Cheers mate)

I just found out yesterday that the insurance company has refused to
repair the car and are writing it off.

The point of this note is to find out if there is anyone who lives in
the basingstoke area who may have seen severe front end damage on a
MKII escort appear at around that time.

I know this is a long shot but its worth a try.

Note.

I went to the hospital after the accident and they billed me 40.00 for
the privalage...... Just in case anyone else unfortunatley finds
themselves in the same situation.

Also, finally does anyone have any tips on how I can get the most out
of the insurance company.

Cheers

Anil.

Maybe the other garage near the Crest Hotel has captured the car
on its video system. If the car was travelling in the same
direction as you, it would have passed that garage first, maybe
the driver was looking for something that the first garage didn't
	stock.

Well here's a real long shot...

If the other driver was totally stupid perhaps s/he just paid for
petrol or other goods using a card of some sort at the garage in
question. (Fuel cards will have the rego on them.) If the garage will
cooperate, you might be able to find the culprit.

P.S. Try visiting (local) crash repairers.
595.3This One May be ConnectedSQGUK::LEARYFri Nov 06 1992 16:2712
This may not be connected and could be a long shot - but -

I saw a T reg Escort which I think was blue (it was a bit dark and
smokey last night) the front of the car was smashed in. It might be
worth having a nose at it. The vehicle was parked in one of the
roads off of Cranbourne Lane which is off the next roundabout down from
the Golden Lion one (sorry I can't remember exactly where but follow
the signs to the Teachers Centre).

    Cheers,
    Karen

Karen,

You're a hero! The car that you spotted was the one that hit me the other day.

We went to take a look at it on friday evening and their was no doubt in my
mind that it was the one. It was parked half a mile from where the accident
happened!

I went to the police station and after some persistance I managed to get them
to send an officer to have a look at the car. The owner of the car told the
officer that the car had been stolen that evening. If the car as stolen, why
was it parked outside the owners house?

My insurance company have agreed to look into this and with any luck, this
"person" will pay for what he did.

Just for good measure, I went to where the car was parked on saturday morning
and spent a ten minutes taking Photos of the damage on the car. The owner was
watching from an upstairs window and the look of horror on his face was the
first instalment of my repayment.

Thanks a lot for the info Karen.
