587.0. "Advice re. car hire/rail/coach please ??" by GIDDAY::BRODRIBB (Scornful dogs eat dirty puddings) Wed Aug 19 1992 13:43
G'day,
I'm in the middle of arranging an imminent trip to the UK and am
looking for a bit of advice on some travel options. While I realise
that Blazingsmoke isn't quite the centre of the Universe, especially
when one is in Australia, this was the closest I could find to an
appropriate notes conference.
The questions:
- does anyone have any experience of, or heard of by reputation, a car
hire mob called Worth Self Drive (Gatwick) Ltd? I guess they've
impressed me a bit so far by 1) advertising in a Sydney newspaper,
2) responding to an international FAX I sent them and 3) by their rates
which seem very reasonable. Any brickbats or otherwise much
appreciated. They're looking very good so far.
- to help me make my mind up on hiring a car the following info would
also be most helpful:
o the cost of a return rail fare London <-> Plymouth
o same for a return coach fare Heathrow <-> Plymouth
I could put heat on my local 'friendly' Sydney travel agent but would I
trust the result 8^(
Thanks for reading this far and, more especially, for any advice
offered.
John

I've never heard of the Car Hire company you've quoted but I've spoken
to Avis with whom Digital has a special rate. They say that if you contact
your personnel dept they should be able to give you the DEC discount no.
for you to then book your car through Avis in Australia. Apparently this
way will be cheaper than it being booked here.
As far as the train is concerned, if you avoid peak times ie between
9am and 4pm and after 6pm, and also avoid Friday, the return cost is
44.00 - if you travel on the Friday then it will be 58.00. Both these
prices are valid for 1 month. If you choose to travel in peak time ie
before 9am and between 4 & 6pm the cost will be 86.00 return - again
this is valid for 1 month.
The coach is a bit cheaper but obviously a longer trip. The cost is
30.00 travelling on Sunday through to Thursday. Travelling on Friday
or Saturday will cost you 36.00. These are with National Express
and are valid for 3 months.
Hope this helps

| G'day Dave,
Thanks for the information. That was just what I was after re. coach/train
fares and provides just what I needed to compare coach/train with what
are some very promising car hire rates at Worth Car Hire.
You were also right w.r.t. Avis - I spoke to personnel and it turns out
that their rates were only a bit (15%) above Worth's. When the dust settles
I'll publish the results here for the benefit of others.
Re: "MINE'S A PINT" - well I would if I could but even VAXmail isn't
that great ... but the entrepreneurial pommie spirit is noted for
future reference!
Stone the lizards and starve the crows,
