534.0. "Manchester notes conference" by KERNEL::SMITHERSJ (Living on the culinary edge....) Mon Mar 09 1992 10:04

    I know this isn't the right conference, but does anyone know if
    there is a notes conference for Manchester? I looked in the
    Easynet conference list but couldn't find one.

    Cheers

534.2We're coming!KERNEL::SMITHERSJLiving on the culinary edge....Tue Mar 10 1992 12:5916
    Hi Huw - how you doing?

    There are a couple of us coming up to Manchester on Training so we
    wanted to know what spots to hit.

    Apparently, there is Manchester's equivalent of Time Out which we
    are getting a copy of which should tell us which places are fab and
    groovy. Can you (or anyone) recommend any places?

    I believe there isn't a Manchester conference - maybe its time for
    someone to start one?

    Cheers

534.3I suppose you could stay in! :-)BLKPUD::WILLIAMSHTue Mar 10 1992 17:0435
    Well Julia... Where does one start!

    What are you into..? Trendy nightclubs? Chic winebars? Real Ale
    pubs? Posh nouveau cuisine? Cantonese? Vietnamese? Japanese? Malaysian?
    Italian? Indian? (If you're into Indian then Rusholme is THE place)
    Pie-n-chips? studenty pubs? Irish Pubs(with imported Guiness)? rough
    pubs? The drugs scene? Arty Cinemas? Opera Houses? Classical concerts?
    Ballet? Casinos? Strip Joints? Gay pubs/clubs/bars? Greyhound racing?
    and loads of other things I cant quite remember now!!!

    Some ideas to start with..... Try The Sanam restauraunt on Wilmslow
    Rd. Rusholme.
    Really good food there. about 100 times better than Hook Tandoori!!!!!!
    (but they're not licensed so get a jug of sweet Lassi and go to a pub
    afterwards)

    Nightclubs.. Not my strong point here.. when I was a student I
    couldnt aford the nightclubs and used to end up down the local. some
    names I can remeber.. The hacienda,fridays,band-on-the-wall umm
    err there's loads of really 'in' clubs.. basically a rule of thumb
    is if there's a queue of people outside what looks like a derelict
    building then that's where it's at. if the club has loads of flashing
    lights outside with a posh entrance and a smart bouncer then it 'out'
    Most clubs and restauraunts are open really late so no need to be
    early.

    If you want to see a good arty film then the Cornerhouse on Oxford Rd,
    opposite the palace theatre is a good bet.. then go to the 'Tommy
    Ducks' pub and see knickers stapled to the ceiling (its just behind the
    cornerhouse near G-Mex)

    If your driving then getting an A-Z is a must. driving around is easy
    outside rush-hours.

    Huw. (let me know what sort of things you want to do....!)
534.4Thanx!KERNEL::LOATBored....Bored....BORED!!!!Wed Mar 11 1992 09:0624
    Hi Huw, hows things up North?

    Guess who one of the others is!

    The Indian looks good, so that'll fill one night (we're there from
    Sunday night till Wednesday night (Monday till Thursday course).

    Nightclubs? You know me, nothing too trendy! Not too studenty either,
    cause you know Julia! Something inbetween would do.

    Chinatown for a decent chinese meal seems like a must judging by what
    people say.

    Most important, where are the decent hotels? Can you recommend any
    inparticular?

    Just thought of something even more important! Where would you go for a
    decent pud crawl? Somewhere safe, and where the pubs are within
    crawling distance if possible!

    Bye for now.

    Steve.

    Typical ... the most life seen in teh Basingstoke conference in
    ages is all about Manchester...

    Jo (who'd strongly recommend an evening up the Marble Arch followed
    by a delicious meal up the Al Khayyam)

534.7How's about a cardboard box under Piccadilly Station!BLKPUD::WILLIAMSHWed Mar 11 1992 20:0428
    You could try this crawl, but most pubs in the Centre are 'safe'
    It's when you start going to some of the other areas that they get
    rough.. ie. Moss Side, Hulme, Ardwick..

    Marble Arch (Real Ale.. get Real pi**ed!) just up Rochdale Rd.
    Square Albert On Albert Square near the Town Hall
    Tommy Ducks (Only Greenalls but see the decor!) next to G-mex behind
                                                     st. Peter's square
    Salisbury On Oxford Rd. Its down an alley next to the station.
    Lass O'Gowrie (they brew their own beer!) behind The BBC
    Flea 'n Firkin on Oxford Rd. next to the Barclays by the Poly.

    and any more you see on the way!!! The crawl is about a mile end to
    end. Whatever you do, keep away from Bloom St.!

    IMHO the Al Khayyam is OK. but not great. about 10X better than Hook
    Tandoori! I Suppose you could order a Howard Page special of Vindaloo
    extra hot with extra chilies!

    Rusholme Indians (the Sanam, Tabak, etc..) and Chinatown (Yang Sing
    etc.) are not to be missed.

    As regards Hotels, can't help you there... I've never stayed in any!
    The ones that come to mind are dead posh expensive ones in the Centre.
    The Midland, Hotel Piccadilly, The Brittania.

    Huw.

534.8a vote for RusholmeCURRNT::PAYNE_ADiscount Pants'n'HaircutsThu Mar 12 1992 08:538
    I'll second Rusholme for an Indian. Went to one (a BYO) there New Years
    Eve - Very good and very cheap.

    Also, the Mark Addy (near the Poly - on the way to Salford) is a good
    pub for a snack to eat (if you can fight your way through the students)
    - not sure about the beer though.
