523.0. "Beechdown in trouble?!" by PAPERS::GRICE (Bring me sunshine ...) Tue Jan 21 1992 12:16

I have just been on the phone to Beechdown Squash Club and have
discovered that the club has gone into receivership and the guy who
managed the club has done a bunk.
Apparently the club was put into receivership by the company who own
the whole business (who are Whitbread) because of debts of the company
    that managed the club.

However the club is still operating and are looking for a new company
to take over the management operation.

The club says that the memberships will still be honoured at the
moment and should(!) be honoured by the new managers.

As somebody who has just joined the club (typical!) I would be
interested if anybody has any opinions on whether this will be
recoverable if the club doesn't reemerge from this one.

    Phil,

having chatted to a few people it seems that you are right. Tom
Harvey-Robson has, to all intents and purposes, 'done a bunk'. Indeed
he has not been seen for a week and a half (meanwhile his cheques are
bouncing etc). Although he bought the club from Crossland Leisure (now
defunct) his financial commitment and involvment with the club is still
not clear (rumour has it that there is a strong amount of con-man in
him. Whitbreads are financially committed to the tune of 300K and are
now the people in the driving seat. Now the good news.....

The club is currently not losing money ie it is a going concern, and as
long as it stays that way Whitbreads will keep it running while looking
for a buyer. From your view point I believe that you will get to see
the year out without too much discomfort and get to enjoy your
membership. For new members the plan is to create a holding fund that
all new memberships will be paid into, should the club fold all
memberships will be returned. This approach allows for a good degree of
confidence in not wasting your money remembering that Whitbread are now
    the 'effective' owners of Beechdown.

The new management team that are now in place are pretty good so I see
    things going quite well.

    Hope this helps.

    Cheers,

    	John
