520.0. "Housing information sought" by MCIS5::CHILTON () Wed Jan 08 1992 21:10

I may be relocating from the US sometime this Spring, could someone
please tell me what towns are within commuting distance to Fareham, Reading
and Basingstoke (i.e. Max of 30 to 45 minute drive in either direction)?
I'd also appreciate any personal observations/opinions on each of these towns.

As you might expect, I'm mainly concerned with housing. Can anyone
give me actual examples of housing prices in these towns for, let's say, a
3 bedroom detached house with garage? Are there any estate agents out there
that you would recommend, preferably from first hand experience? What's a
good source for mortgage related information (or maybe someone could point me
to a notes conference where this has already been explained)?

I'd also be grateful if you could post names and addresses for any
'official' sources of information here, both on the towns themselves and
housing - anything you can find or refer me to would be appreciated.

Btw, this request has also been posted in conferences READING and
    SOLENT_VIEWS.

Thanks,
Paul

30 - 45 minutes either way to Basingstoke and Fareham and you're
probably looking at Winchester or Alton areas... Reading can easily
take 30 minutes from Basingstoke thanks to the A33 being quite busy.

Sorry, don't know the house prices too muchthough I'd imagine
Winchester isn't too cheap since it's a lovely old town with good
    countryside around...

I live in Basingstoke and commute to the DEC facility in Fareham. Thats
    a 40 minute drive.

As the previous reply pointed out, it can take the same time to get to
Reading, in rush hour, but more reasonably Reading to Basingstoke is
    a 15 to 20 minute drive.

As regards house prices in and around Basingstoke, expect to pay
in the region of 85,000 for a 3 bed detached in a reasonable estate
    location....

In looking at the map yesterday I think we need to really look at homes
from the Micheldever-Twyford-Alton area, it forms a triangle in the area between
Fareham and Basingstoke. Does anyone have access to property papers that would
cover this area? If so, I'd really appreciate you forwarding them (UPO1-3) on.

Thanks,
Paul

    Paul,

I used to live in Alton - it is a nice little town, albeit quiet! It
is a 40 minute drive to Fareham, and Reading, Basingstoke is about a 20
minute drive. Nice area to live as the countryside around the town is
    really lovely.

    Regards,

Thanks for the information Alison; what are house prices like in Alton
and how does it compare to other towns in the area?

    Thanks,

Another vote for Alton - cos I live there!

House prices I believe are more expensive in Alton than Basingstoke,
and Fareham (I think, but could be wrong).

If you don't want to live in the town itself, then there are many
nearby pretty villages, but the houses tend to be more expensive than
    in the town.

And don't forget, if you buy a house at the moment, its a buyers market
and there are many good deals to be had on mortgages especially if you
    are a first time buyer.

    Paul,

I collected some newspapers from Basingstoke last night - I'll pop them
in the internal mail for you - they have a reasonably large section on
houses in the Basingstoke area...that includes Alton.

    Cheers,

    Alison

Sure, you're just acting like another agent (but cheaper).

I'd recommend Alton too, I've just moved to Beech (about 2 miles west
of Alton). It's far nicer than Basingstoke to live in. Journey times are 15-20
minutes to Basingstoke, 40 minutes to Fareham office & about 35-40 minutes to
DECpark in Reading.

.? whose house has been on the market for 6 months, don't despair, we
put our house up for sale last April/May (it's been so long I've forgotten
exactly when) & just moved a couple of weeks ago.

I've been boring everybody rigid with the story of my house
sale/purchase, it was by no means smooth & I fervently hope that I never have
to move again. It's been worth it in the end though. I now own over 5 acres of
Hampshire (the building society owns the house). It's a reflection of the state
of the property market that I wouldn't have been able to afford my new house a
year ago.

Some newspapers that I'd recommend for country properties are the Alton
Herald (there are several papers in the group all with the same adverts e.g.
Bordon Herald, Farnham Herald etc) and the Hampshire Chronicle from Winchester
(incidentally the oldest local newspaper in the country). I'll pop some old
copies in the mail for you.

Errmm, can we stop recommending Alton now - I don't want everyone
moving there and causing traffic chaos in the morning.

    Harvey,

Yes, you can privately have your house up for sale at the same
time as the agencies. Be careful though if someone rings you up
to view through your ad, and then that person receives the details
through the agent. You may find yourself in deep doo doo if that
    happens.

I did that - I got quite a few calls from the ad (without a photo)
so it can be quite profitable.

Due to a number of reasons, my wife and I have decided against moving to
the UK at this time. I'd like to thank everyone for for their input to
    this topic (and a special thanks to those of you who sent property listings;
RE: .14 thanks Nigel), it helped us a great deal.

    Thanks again,
    Paul
