| I'm a coming home to England this weekend and have heard scant reports of
extreme weather conditions expected but nothing concrete. Could
someone give me the long term forecast please?

| The weather men are predicting high winds and storms for the weekend of
Jan 5th & 6th. Winds up to 80 MPH are expected and some damage is
likely although I think it is going to be worse in the midlands.
However the last time the weathermen predicted severe storms nothing
much happened, I think they may be over reacting a bit 'cos they dont
want to get slated for not predicting the damage like happened in 87 &
90.
Apart from that things are a bit wet & grey here at the moment.

| Thanks for the update. I'm just leaving for DFW now, and BA say that
the flight is on time, so I guess all must be OK at home right now.

| Well it looks like there has been no weather in Basingstoke since 1991
and then we get it all in one go!
Last night I tried going from the Cresent to Petersfield via Alton at
17:30, after 2 hours I was still stuck in stationary traffic about 1
mile outside Alton on the A339, so I gave up, turned round and stayed
in Basingstoke for the night (arriving back here at 20:20). On my
journey back I must have passed about 2 more miles of stationary
traffic in various sections and 8 or 9 abandoned/crashed vehicles.
Did anyone out there manage to get through to Alton on that road,
and at what time did it open again ? Also does anyone know what the
blockage was at the Alton end, was it a crash or a particularly bad bit
of road?

| Gawd knows - Selborne road was closed too. I left at 5.20 last night
and didn't home in Alton until almost 10.00 pm!! I turned around in
the jam on the outskirts of Alton and came back to Basingstoke (cos I
was running out of petrol) and got back to Basingstoke at 8.15.
Odiham to Alton Road was closed so I went up the M3 to Farnborough
and along the A325 which was jammed solid.
What a journey! There were overturned cars, ambulances and police
cars going up the middle lane up some of the narrow bits along the
Basingstoke-Alton Road, and police turning away anyone who had
rear wheel drive.
I lent someone my jump leads and didn't get them back. I spoke to
another guy to find out why the traffic was stationary at Alton
and he was most helpful...... he said " It's snowing".
So there was I savouring the thought of a day off today, only to find
the roads clear in Basingstoke. Pah!

| I left Viables at 5:30. I got throuh Alton at about 7:50.
I has just started down the Selborne road when I heard on the
radio that it was closed at Greatham, so turned and went up
over the bypass and down to West Meon. Finally arrived at
Petersfield at 9:45.
The delay going into Alton was a lorry stuck on the hill just
before the nursery. The road was so slippery it was very
difficult to get pass. There were 5 lorries stuck at the hill
at Langrish.
