| Until this year it had always been my impression that insurance
companies were extraordinarily reluctant to pay out and would wriggle out of it
at any opportunity.
However I've had two claims in the past year on my Houshold Insurance
policy (contents & building) and have been pleasantly surprised with the
service that I have received from the insurers (Sun Alliance).
I had a greenhouse & TV/radio aerials destroyed in the last Great Storm
which I claimed for. I got a quote for replacing the greenhouse which amounted
to quite a lot as there was the cost of dismantling the wreckage, clearing
broken glass etc. They wrote saying that I should get the work done and then
submit receipts. I wrote back & said that I would like to buy a better quality
more expensive greenhouse so please could they send me a cheque. Sun Alliance
said that I would have to spend the money and then send them the receipts and
they would reimburse me for the amount of the original quote. This I did and
had a cheque for 798 back within 3 weeks. I dismantled the old greenhouse,
picked up all the broken glass (>100 panes) and erected the new one so that I
could afford a much better greenhouse than the onw that I had previously.
It took a long time to get someone to permanently repair the aerials
and even longer to get an invoice out of them but as soon as I had paid it I
submitted a copy to the insurers and received a cheque within 10 days.
I suspect that it very much depends on your insurers as my father has
had a number of claims refused on rather dubious grounds over the years by the
Prudential.

I had storm damage to my roof, and after phoning, getting the quote,
and having the work done, they refused to pay, because the
assessor hadn't seen the damage before I had the work done.
The Building Society (on behalf of the insurers) had told me to go
right ahead, as I had water pouring through the ceiling, threatening
to bring the ceiling down too.
It took me much time and effort, I eventually had the full amount,
however it came with a letter saying it was a good will gesture, and
didn't mean they accepted they should cough up!
