300.0. "Where to stay in Basingstoke?" by SAHQ::LUBER (This space available for rent) Fri May 11 1990 14:46

When I was in England a few weeks ago, I stayed at the Swan House in
Kingsclere and commuted to Basingstoke each day. I noticed a Hilton on
one of the roundabouts in Basingstoke. Is this a nice place to stay,
or should I stay at the Swan House again if I come back?

    Any other suggestions?

There are 2 Hiltons in Basingstoke, the one you saw at the
Aldermaston Road roundabout, and another near the Black Dam
roundabout. Both are typical "international" hotels. If you
liked the Swan House then why not stay there again.

There is another alternative, if you don't mind a drive into
Basingstoke.... this is Tylney Hall, near Rotherwick (East of
town off the A30.... it is well recommended by many of my visitors.

re .2 I believe that a) they offer Digital rates, and b) _used_
to be cheaper than the Hilton....

Yeah,

I stayed two nights at Tylney when I was relocating.

It was cheaper than (then) Ladbroke Lodge (now Hilton), and by far the nicest
hotel I've stayed in.

Food was fantastic!

300.6How modern is it?SAHQ::LUBERThis space available for rentTue May 15 1990 14:538
Does Tylney have all of the accomodations we spoiled Americans are used
    to?

    - Private bath
    - Air conditioning
    - TV

    etc.

A feature of Tylney is the size of room, and decor.....I am sure
that "you Americans" would just love the place..... even though it
    _probably_ hasn't got air-conditioning.

And, yes, rooms have private facilities, TV, and there is a snooker
    room, bar etc.....

Somone said it's near Rotherwick, if so take it, you can forget
about the hotel bar and get yourself off down to "The Coach and
    Horses" pub....

Stupendous selection of *REAL* ales.... Something every American
    should try....

    MMMMMmmmmmm.....

PLease provide phone number for reservations and directions from M3.
How far a commute is it from Basingstoke? Is there shopping nearby?
300.11More infor supplied.SHAPES::STREETRex-childWed May 16 1990 17:2012
Phone: 0256-764881 (leave first 0 off if phoning from USA)

Directions: Exit Junction 5 from M3. If coming off from London
direction take 3rd exit from the roundabout. Possibly signed A30.
After 400 yards you will hit A30 at T junction. I think the
road for Rotherwick is signed from here. Anyway its 2 miles or so
North of here via Newnham. Someone may like to give clearer directions.

Shopping: No local shops..... Main stores in Basingstoke which is
between 8-10 minutes drive depending on time of day.

    Ray.

From the M3 Junction 5, take the exit signposted to Newnham,
At the junction of the A30 go straight across.
After 200 yds you get to a T-junction, turn left.
After 1 miles you get to Newnham.
Here, take the right hander signposted Rotherwick.
After 1 mile, Tylney Hall is on the left.
