They normally serve Badger and Courage Best plus a few of those fizzy
drinks (lagers?) for youngsters that can't take the real stuff.

things, however,I get the impression that they are a bit like making

It's a pity the New Inn doesn't do 6x,however,on second thoughts that
may not actually be a bad thing.

The new inn at stratfield saye ...
There is no pub of any description at Stratfield Saye: the Jekyll
& Hyde and Wellington Arms (both Badger's inns, and the latter charges
a little more for the beer being a 15 room hotel) are in Stratfield
TURGIS.
Incidentally they will shortly (though I have no idea when exactly)
begin to build a relief road for the A33 between Stratfield Saye/Turgis
and Heckfield, with the result that the Jekyll & Hyde will find
itself on a road from nowhere to nowhere... I wonder what will become
of it then... ?

| re .9:
The New Inn at Stratfield Saye is reached thus;
From Junction 11 on the M4 take the A33 travelling south towards Basingstoke.
At 1st roundabout, go straight on continuing on the A33.
At the 2nd roundabout on the A33, turn right taking the Beech Hill/Mortimer
turning.
Pass over hump back bridge.
At "Y" junction fork left for Stratfield Saye.
At staggered crossroads in Stratfield Saye turn right.
Continue until next staggered crossroads, go straight across (actually
right/left), pub is immediately on the right.
Dave.

| I take my first comment on the pub in Stratfield Saye village back:
indeed there is a pub in the village proper.
Alternate route -- from A33 by Wellington Arms take the side road,
at the T-junction turn left and immediate right... road goes to
the village crossroads.

Hi Richard (Mr. Mountford).
All the directions have been given befor I read this but from
Reading I go: M4 junction 11, follow 33 to first round-a-bout and
turn left, follow road to next round-a-bout (this sounds like
basingstoke but I't actually 3 mile cross), strainght across this
spot in the road, follow this road up the hill untill you reach
the Murco garage/petrol station on the right, turn right directly
after the garage and follow this road until you reach the cross
roads the New Inn is directly cross the road..
Bewarned..this is a "spit & sawdust" type pub normally a couple
of locals will be sat in the corner discussing the daily rat catching
escapades (my own oppinion). It's a nice place though if you want
a quiet pub with a large selection (if they don't have it on draft
it will most probably be on the shelf somewhere)
Alan
ps If you like the taste of Theakstons XXX then this is the place
for you..

| Re the New Inn.
The present landlord has not been able to renew his lease and bids a farewell
tomorrow.
The pub will then belong to the group who own the Jekyll and Hyde, who plan
to extensively modernise it (taking away all the wonderful beers in the process)

The Cricketers (a little further down the A33 towards Basingstoke
than the Jekyll & Hyde, and just off the road to the left when driving
towards Basingstoke) is incidentally the pub used by the staff of
the Jekyll & Hyde & Wellington Arms when *they* want a drinky
Incidentally the Wellington arms is to become a lot bigger soon
(another 25-30 rooms and a "major" conference facility will be added),
making it the "flagship" of Badger Inns. This is apparently tied
to, or at least inspired by, the plans for the re-routing of the A33.
It would appear that Badger are hoping to monopolise the trade in
the Stratfield area.

 live music,
what sort of music?
football training,football watching,
Does football exist south of the Trent?
 theatres
I suspect that with both live music and theatres the truth is that
Basingstoke/Reading are close enough to London that people are more
likely to go to London than patronise a local venue.
When I first visited Basingstoke on business I was told that people
went down town and watched the traffic lights change for amusement
locally. It has improved marginally since then, but it is still
advisable to indulge in a little strong ale before risking the local
entertainment [:-) :-) :-)]

| Ian,
you have it all wrong....
we southerners frequently indulge in Music, theatre, football and
high society. However the indulgence is mainly talking about such
subjects while enjoying a couple of pints at the pub :-)

If the New Inn closes I'll just go a little further down the road
to a pub that is similar..

It must be your lucky month. Not only will you be able to tour the

that plays indoors most weeks. We are not brilliant but we work

Thanks for the tip about "Brighton Beach Memoirs", it is a pretty
good show and well worth the 7 squid entrance money. It is funny
in a subtle, broad grin sort of a way as oppossed to a gut laughter
type of show,it is not racey, however, the words Brests and Golden
Land of the Himalyas are mentioned on several ocassions.
All in all a pleasant change from having a few beers in a smoke
filled rub-a-dub..
Go see it and support your local theatre.......
