193.0. "Hot Air Balloons" by SHAPES::ALLENT () Fri Aug 04 1989 18:01

It is my mother's sixtieth birthday on 17th August and my sister
and I have decided that we would like to organise a Balloon ride
for her (as a surprise.... she would never agree to it!!!).

Only problem is that we know not of any club or whatever that would
be willing to take a hysterical woman into the sky.

Does anyone out there know if this wonderful pressie is going to
be possible after all??? And more importantly.... how much???

Your help in this plot would be much appreciated

I have seen some advertisements for balloon rides in private eye - you could
try sneaking at a copy in the newsagents. Cost, I think, was about 80.

The best and easiest place in the country to get a balloon ride
is BATH - where they take off from Victoria park almost nightly
    in great quantities.

Contact the tourist information who will have details of who does
rides commercially. It will sting your wallet though - last time
I looked, it was going to cost about #75.00 - and you had to provide
a couple of people to track the damm thing across country!

What about parascending or jumping from the Clifton suspension bridge
    from a long piece of elastic - that would r e a l l y be a surprise!

    Regards

Hilton International Hotels run action weekends around the country.
Their ballooning weekends are run from Basinstoke and Bristol and
a couple of places further north. This includes Friday and Saturday
night accomodation, full breakfast, and the flight on Saturday, with
champagne on landing, and a certificate. You automatically become a
member of the ballooning club. Bit pricey at 145, but certainly a weekend
to remember. If that's too expensive you could try contacting the
Hilton National in Basingstoke to find out which local club they
    use.

Many thanks for all your advice, particularly the long piece of
elastic (definitely a favourite for a while!!)

Due to the cost, need for favourable conditions, effort etc. we
have decided to plump for a flying lesson at Hurn Airport, Bournemouth
at 30 pounds for a half hour.

At that price I wouldn't mind a go myself - my birthday is in February
if you want to start saving for a collection???

    Thanks again
