161.0. "GOOD GRUB????" by LARVAE::MOORE_A (Dont Worry- Its only 1's and 0's) Wed May 31 1989 20:42

Does anybody know of a good pub to have lunch within a reasonable
    distance of Skippets House?

There will be about 12 people - so a bit of space would be useful

What would you call a reasonable distance?

I know of a pub out on the Andover road, which would take about
10-15 mins max to get to. Called the Deanegate Inn.

That must be the quickest reply on record. Thanks.

Sounds good - do you know what sort of thing they do, and how to
    get there.

    Thanks.

If the weather is nice, try the Millstone Pub (follow the signs to
the Basing House Ruins out towards Old Basing) the food consists of
roast and cold meat and a nice variety of salads. Prices are around
3.15 (pounds) for roast + salad. They have a nice selection of
real ales if you haven't been there before.

You should be able to get 12 around the tables in pub garden, if
the weather is not nice you would be advised to avoid it as the pub
	itself is not very big...

How about the Queens at Dummer.

Foods good if a little expensive and you can reserve a table.

Do you know Basingstoke well? Directions are easy if you know
where the Andover road is - ie B3400. Reason I ask is that there
are 2 different routes you can easily take from where I think you
are - between Texaco garage and Golden Lion?

Pub is small but 12 shouldnt be a problem. You can also ring up
and ask if some tables can be reserved.

Bar menu is fairly normally, ie basket meals, scampi, sausages, seafood,
and also lasagne, salads, ploughmans etc. Prices start from 2.00
    Sandwiches are also available.

Can recommend the gammon - best I've had. For a pudding try the
    apple and cinnamon cheesecake.

I work there on occasions, so info is good.

Courage pub so selection of beers not great, but well kept.

Also has a small restaurant, which is non-smoking. Open
most evenings. With good selection of well cooked food.

    Plug over

I think the place between the garage and the Golden Lion is the
Crescent ? Or is Skippets near here too ???

Skippets House is between the Texaco Garage/Crest and the
     Mobil Garage/Golden Lion.

The Crescent is in Jays Close, nearly opposite the Golden Lion
and just along the road from the Support Centre.
