132.0. "Aharr, Gym, Lad !" by FOOT::PREECE (Just a shallow hole, Moriarty.) Thu Apr 06 1989 10:21

OKAY, OKAY, lets do the jokes first, and get them out of the way.....

I freely confess to being an overweight (Oh, all right, fat !),
unfit desk-pusher, closing fast on forty, and driving a long way
every day. The question is, what am I going to do about it ?
Does anyone know of a Gym, Health Club, etc. in the Basingstroke
area who will take me in hand, promise not to laugh, and turn me
    into a bronzed Adonis in a couple of lunch-times a week ?

    Thanks,
    Ian

	Ian,

The Beechdown Club on the Winchester Road, they give
a discount for Digital employees. I don't know how much
it costs as for the health suite, Sauna, jacuzzi and weights
(I try play squash there). There number is 57377.

Also the sports centre in the town centre is apparently quite
good but I don't know any details.

    HI

I have just been down to the gym at Hampshire house, and you need
a 'users permit' before you can get in. This Gym would be ideal
for me, and I would like to use it. I am a qualified wieght lifting
instructer, and dont want to do any more courses to get cards to
use gyms (!! The Sports Centre Expierience !!). I do not work at
Hampshire house. So can anybody tell me how I can get a card, so
that the lady at the bar will let me flex my rapidly expanding tummy.

There are two people that I know of in Hampshire House, (though not a
lot of people know this!) who may take you over to the gym, and
'run' you through the equipment. This will enable you to get a
card. The BEST person to Contact is David EJ Wilson. He sits next
to me here on the third floor at Hampshire House (although he isn't
here today). You can normally contact him on 7768-5421.

I HOPE HE DOESN'T MIND ME GIVING YOU HIS NAME.

    	Hi,
I'm new to Basingstoke and I'm looking for a gym so that
I can work out a couple of evenings a week and maybe at the
weekend too. I should mention that I'm out of condition so
I'll be looking for some type of instruction, help or someone
to lift the weights for me.

Beechdown has a fitness assessment scheme which will result in
a fitness training program geared to what you want and need and
you will be shown how to do the exercises properly. I'd recommend
    it.

    Andy...

having started this topic, I took everybody's advice and checked
out the Beechdown. I can thoroughly recommend it. There are a
number of Deccies in regular attendance, in varying states of health
or otherwise, so plenty of moral support, if you need it.

Beechdown staff do give you guidance and advice, and the gym is
supervised at all times. You can also get an assessment before
you start, just to find out how bad things really are !

If you need any more info, directions, or moral support, give me
    a call.
