I tried Philips last night and indeed they have an impressive
selection of hammers, but only a small second hand section and
unfortunately they don't do part exchange.

There used to be a mail order company that specialised in
second hand tools, and I'm sure they would except trade-ins.
Look in the Sunday Times, I'm sure they used to advertise there.

As there doesn't appear to be much chance of snow again this
Winter, I don't think I will have any further use for my
sledge hammer if it's any use to you.

Ian (who doesn't understand whats going on in this topic but doesn't
see why he shouldn't join in).

Dave, I've got two hammers. One of them I bought new and the other
secondhand, curiously the secondhand one works just as well as
the new one - funny old world isn't it?

Anyway, I will GIVE you my second secondhand hammer (if you don't
mind receiving secondhand secondhand hammers), all you have to do
is promise me the first blow you strike with it will be to Tony's
    thumb.

Obviously still in compressed format - that's what comes of using
    too many computer tools ....

    Thats strange,

I have been able to access the HAMMER notesfile from here with no
    problems whatsoever.

I found the note on obtaining and fitting 2nd relief valves to
pnuematic hammers particularly interesting and useful. I never knew who
difficult it was until I tried it for myself. I view the council road
gangs in a whole new light, having done it myself.

By the way, I have recently bought a second hand handle for my hammer.
Does anyone know where I can get those funny wedgy things that you
hammer into the end of the handle to fasten the head on. I have tried
both Philips and Phillips in town but to no avail. (I have crossposted
this request in the HAMMER notes file.

    Thanks,

    Greg.

    Where from? You don't say.

I was given a second-hand head for my hammer a few weeks ago and I'm
very pleased with it. I'd now like to fit a second-hand handle as
I'm sure it would make all the difference. It's a very good hammer,
much better than the ones they make today.

    Dear Odium::EY1786U14

If you type "SHOW ERROR" at the Notes> prompt, you will be given more
information as to why you are unable to access the HAMMER notesfile.

Try again and report back here and maybe someone can help.

In addition, you will find that your notes take on a more pleasing look
if you type mostly in lower case (except for pronouns et cetera) and
then the note is a lot less tiring on the eyes. Noting in UPPERCASE IS
KNOWN AS SHOUTING in the vernacular, and as such should only be used
when you wish to emphasise (spelling?) a point.

Re: a few notes earlier about FUNNY::xxxxxxx.

I have to concur with Tony (Imbierrski) that if we start lowering the
tone of this note and the notesfile in generally by "making things up"
then we may lose readers and impact. I, for one, am tempted not to read
any further when someone starts taking the mickey.

By the way Tony, sorry if I spelt you name incorrectly above, but I
did not note down the correct spelling before starting to write this
note. I couldn't remember if there was one "b" or two.

    Regards and happy noting.....

Phil, I think you know better than to ridicule your ex-colleagues
at the CSC, who work long hours in often difficult circumstances.
They are worthy of your support and sympathy, so please refrain from
Ratholing this fascinating investigation into matters of the toolkit.

    	Ian,
Wow, someone with similar interests ! I too, have spent many
happy and useful minutes perusing the vast array of useful
information contained in the Industrial Archeology notesfile.
The topic on early 17th century Dutch uranium excavation
    	is particularly interesting.

I have not yet had a chance to review the tome by L.T.C. Rolt,
however, rest assured, the next time I find myself at the
stockists of great literary masterpieces, the Basingstoke and
Deane Public Library, I will avail myself of it.

I too would like to unreservedly apologize for my previous reply to
this note and just hope that others might learn from my experience that
to take other people's tools too lightly (especially when considering
hammers) is obviously a grave error. Perhaps we might look forward to
continuing this enlightening discussion in LOOKIN::HAMMERS?

I happen to be a collector of vintage hammers ( the present count
being about 35 ) ranging from the lesser known 18th century T-piece
micrometer to the better known early 20th century model-T-hammer
( any colour so long as black ), and have read with avid interest
the previous notes on second hand hammers. Only the other day on
the antiques roadshow a lady appeared with a hammer that had been
in the family for years and it actually turned out to be an early
Swedish full grip swing hammer and was very valuable!!

So a message to all you people who have bought second hand hammers
or have had them given to you, I would thoroughly recommend having
    them valued.

Does any know where the nearest hammer museum is as one can spend
many enjoyable hours watching some banging going on in the
    demonstration rooms.

    Cheers

I must admit, I enjoy a good hammer as much as the next man, but
overall I think I prefer screwing. It surely is a more skilful
art as one has to be gentle but firm, strong yet not boisterous
and more accurate than if one is having a bang (with a hammer).

Those of you with a need for second-hand hammers, and other second-hand
tools, may like to know of a marvelous emporium to be found in Oxford.
At the Plain end of Cowley Rd. is the wonderful "Used Tool Centre".
This spendid establishment has second-hand tools of all types and an
especially fine selction of used hammers.

In addition, they also buy used tools, so I suppose you could consider
this to be part-exchange or trade-in.
